Where should I go next fall? / Re: GW to enroll 770+ students?!?!?!
« on: August 03, 2006, 10:19:05 AM »
This has been resolved.  Some idiot on the GW SBA wrote on the SBA website that 770 students were coming as the incoming 1L class.  I think it was a way to get 2Ls and 3Ls to share lockers.  Not official by any means.
The Associate Dean on the admitted students board said the class would be the same size as last year.

Wait List / Re: GW vs. Vandy
« on: July 27, 2006, 09:21:05 AM »
I was down to those two schools and chose GW.  However, I've been living in DC for the past 3 years and am near certain I want to practice in either DC, Philly, or NYC.  I am much more comfortable in a "Northeast corridor" environment, so I felt I would be a little out of place at Vandy.
If you finish top 25%-35% at either school you will have a plenty of options available to you, so if you are indifferent about where you want to practice, it's all about where you'd feel most comfortable.  Outside of OCI, it will be easier to network in DC/Philly/NY from GW because of its location and number of grads.  If you want mid-south/southeastern cities such as Memphis or Atlanta, then Vandy might be preferable.

Count me in as well.  Just to make myself a little more crazy, was anybody else called by the admissions office a couple of months ago, with the message that they were on the short list of waitlisted candidates to be accepted, and that we should email Dean Hoye to confirm our interest?  I got this call and emailed Hoye right away, but was not later accepted.  This, suffice to say, was not a pleasant experience.

Wait List / Re: Duke Waitlist Update
« on: June 19, 2006, 05:27:15 PM »
My guess is that by now they have a ranked list of last minute WL admits should someone withdraw at this point.  But I'd say go ahead and send in that LOR.  It can't hurt your position, that's for sure.
That being said, it's getting pretty late.  I wouldn't take up Lacrosse yet.

Wait List / Re: Georgetown Waitlist is moving
« on: June 06, 2006, 11:23:15 AM »
Not even by June 12, but by the week of June 12.  So I'm giving it until June 17 before we should be worried about not hearing anything.
I'd send that second deposit to GW.

The email said that it was sent to a group of applicants that GULC would turn to in the case seats opened following the June 1 deposit deadline.  It asked to reply whether or not the applicant was still interested in accepting a seat at Georgetown or if any pressing deadlines were coming up for other schools.

Anybody else get an email from Sophia Sim about being on a shortlist today?  I guess the second deposit is due June 1 so there may be some seats opening up.

I would go with Notre Dame even if you want to work in DC.  Almost every student at GW is going there over some other school because they want to work in DC - why else would you pay such a huge premium when there are similar options for a fraction of the price?  Thus, when it comes to OCI, the GW student will be competing against almost all of their class - the supply of applicants far far outweighs the demeand from the firms because firms want diverse summer classes.  In contrast, your classmates at Notre Dame came there, for the most part, for the reputation of the school, not so they could get a job in Indiana.  They will be looking to go all over the country, meaning that a relatively small percentage of your classmates will actually be trying to end up in any one market.  This greatly tilts the supply side.  For example, the DC firms want a Notre Dame student, just like they want a GW student, a UVA student, a W&L student, G-town student, a Harvard student, etc.  So, the supply/demand comparison is much different, and I think better, for the Notre Dame student, plus you're not paying a ton to still live a 40 minute metro ride from school.

This is, to put it mildly, not very good advice.  Do a search of the NALP directory to find how many firms from DC interview at GW, and how many interview at ND.  I can assure you that many more interview at GW.
Maybe a student at the top of the class at Notre Dame will have some choices in DC, but a median student from Notre Dame will not be getting any jobs over a median student from GW in DC, simply because the firm wants a "diverse class".

Wait List / Re: Duke - Waitlist

Got a phone call saying I was in a group for final review, wanted to see if I was interested and had to email Dean Hoyes.  The woman said decisions would be made end of week.  Is this a procces for people who were accepted?  i responded ASAP to the dean.  I would be SO happy if I got in - im sort of giddy and unable to focus at work, but i also dont know what it means.  any insight is appreciated.

I received the same call...Immediately fired off an email to Dean Hoye.  I asked if I could add anything to my application for the "final review", the admissions officer told me it wasn't necessary.  So I figure that's a good sign.  Don't want to get too excited though...
