Law School Admissions / Re: Importance of Undergrad University

I bet your alma mater might give you a boost.  But unless you go to an Ivy league school, I do not think it makes a difference.  After all, U.S. News doesn't discriminate in their rankings.

Choosing the Right Law School / Re: Villanova or USC?

To give the OP some credit, I do not think its unsafe to assume she'll be higher in her class at Villanova over USC.

I mean, the world's greatest supersleuth is going to be at USC, c'mon.. 8)

Seriously, I bet competition is more fierce at USC than Villanova.  The median caliber of student at USC is greater than the 75th percentila at Villanova.  This is based on statistics, of course.  In general, with few exceptions, statistics reflect a student's intelligence and work-ethic.

I prefer to surround myself with motivated people with a record of academic success.
I know I would be less motivated to study at a worse school, so that's one reason I would take USC over Villanova.

After all this discussion, it seems like an MBA is pointless with a JD.  For one, you can take a few graduate level business courses outside of the law school, so you can learn the essentials like accounting and finance.  Besides, "speaking in business people's own language", as somebody aptly put it, probably isn't too hard to do with a little self-study.

However, I think an MBA might look good on your resume, especially if you start your own company.  It would look good to investors and clients.  But this is something one could get later in life, after they choose to leave the law.  In the end, I do not think it is worth the extra time and money.

Ws pull down your LSAC GPA though as opposed to most school's practice of not counting them toward your GPA as long as you re-take. So, when you have a "w" and an "A" (for example), that would translate to points worth a C in the LSAC calculation.

my 4 W's did nothing to my LSAT gpa...actually, my GPA increased slightly from my degree

also... isn't the education you receive in an MBA program mostly bunk?

Well, I'm not sure if I'd call it that.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you learn accounting, financing, taxation, marketing, etc..., in an MBA?  All of which I am clueless.Isn't the program like a glorified undergrad business program?

Yeah, but doesn't an MBA cost like 50K at a good school?  So you might get a bonus, but in the long run wouldn't it even out?

However, do you think opportunities for advancment might be better with an MBA?  Rationnally, it sounds like they would be because you have more knowledge.  I am thinking about getting one because I am almost positive I want to get involved in business law somewhere down the line, and I did not study business, nor took any business classes, in undergrad.

I had four W's on my transcript from a semester I dropped out of college and I still got into gpa and LSAT were right at the median, so I think that's all they really cared about

When would an M.B.A. be good to get with a J.D.?

I bring up USNWR rankings becuase, even though every school supposedly does not endorse them, EVERY school always refers to them.  If there's one thing I am sure about, law school admissions is a great game to climb up the USNWR ranking...
