Minority and Non-Traditional Law Students / Re: Need advice

No doubt it will give you a boost, especially with your personal statement. But without knowing what your LSAT scores are, you can really know too much about your prospect. You have a good gpa and a good personal story, which will get you over the hump against those with similar numbers. So it depends on your LSAT score what range of "similar numbers" you are working with. Until you get your LSAT scores back, you have no way of knowing where you stand!!!

Get that 4.0 you mentioned and do your best on the Lsat, then you can go from there!!

Good luck!!

Choosing the Right Law School / Re: Howard or Maryland?

I actually did get that invitation, but since I"m not planning on going to Maryland I'm more than likely not going. Are you going to go? Have you started looking into housing options?

Yea thats what I thought too but I still signed up for it since I havent posted my seat deposit yet, you never know anything can happen in these next 10-15 days lol..but yea I think I am going to go and check it out, worse case scenerio, I might get some networking going on.

I started for a little bit and talked to the dean. He actually advised that I wait till "someone makes howard class of 2012" facebook group and then trying to work it out from there lol..but the places I saw were pretty expensive. Especially the one across from the law school was running around 1200 1300 a month..there were some around 800 900 range but they were further down the city. Not too far though!!.

Have you?

Hey everyone I am contemplating attending Howard next fall because I know they have a lot of great opportunities, a good faculty, and I like D.C. a lot but I wanted to know if anyone had any information on how non-black students chances are at getting interviews with the top firms that come to Howard, if they get summer and full-time opportunities from the big firms, and if they are as successful in general compared to black students being at an historically black school. Any info is well appreciated, thanks!

Your best bet will be to talk to the career service at Howard or better yet if you go on facebook and search for Howard School of Law, there are several Howard Student groups and alumni groups. You can look on there and ask the non minority Howard Law school students so you can hear it from the horse mouth to back up whatever you find out from the career service. I have talked to many Howard Law students/alumni by simply going through the group. They were all very helpful and did not mind the fact I randomely hit them up on facebook.

I am a URM, However I am interested in knowing how these non-minorities attending Howard are faring. My feeling is they have opportunites just the same but I dont have any facutal knowledge to back that up with. So update us and what you find out. Good luck!!

Black Law Students / Re: Life As An Associate

I read somewhere that all these laid off associates are applying for "public interest" work now. Which had me thinking, if I was some non profit organization would I take one of these laid off associates over the other law students who wanted to do public interest law since the day they left law school?

I am not saying these laid of associates are bad people or anything like that. Just in general, how do you guys feel about situations like that?

Me, personally, if I was some hiring person in public interest field I will probably tell these associates kind of like that Mike Jones song "Back then they didnt want me now Im hot they all on me!!" kind of deal!!

Sorry brah!! I only know about Howard and not too much about the other schools you listed. Speaking on Howard, career wise you will be straight coming out of Howard and also Howard places relatively well around the nation so you might actually get to go back to Cali and work after graduation (I don't know the exact numbers but You will probably have to do really well to make that happen though). Also the cost of living in DC is pretty high, on Howard's website it says cost of living is 23K (although many students I have talked to say it is much higher than that in actuality), maybe its because they only calculate for 9months instead of 12 months a year.

That is all I got for you lol, but congrats on your successful cycle (even if you didn't expect it lol). Its a good problem to have :)

I have no knowlegde on the Bar exams topic but I am curious on why  I never hear anyone saying they are taking the D.C bar. Its always NY or MD (now i think of it I never hear anyone saying they are taking the VA bar either but not as much as the reference to DC)

Onyx. The lyrics are so violent, haha, I have to jump up and run to the stereo everytime mom dukes or my lil cousins come to the house while I got onyx on lol
That's cute. are you gonna get grounded if they hear it?  :D

I am impressed how OP manages to stay on track and objective while discussing his beliefs, which people are taking apart lol, agree with him or not..its impressive he is having a mature disucssion and tolerant of other peoples view instead of flying of the handle and calling people all sorts of things like most traditionalist people do when people disagree with them.

Thanks for editing my post, I got the point lol.
