Job Search / So what exactly qualifies as BIGLAW?
« on: September 02, 2008, 04:34:25 PM »
Any firm in the Vault 100? AMLAW 250? Any firm that pays market?

What is the cutoff for a firm to be considered BIGLAW?

What are the work hours REALLY like?

Does it make a significant difference in the chance of getting a callback if the interview is pre-screened instead of a lottery?

I've seen numbers like 15-25% of interviews get a callback. Does pre-screening significantly raise the percentage of callbacks?

My gut tells me it should since the firm has already evaluated you on some level and given you the ok.

I also go to American and was disappointed by the number of interviews I got.

even if it said top 10% and you were top 50%, it doesn't hurt to apply does it?

No, absolutely I would apply. I'm just trying to figure out what the realistic chances are.

I'm only a rising 2L, but I AM old. I took 8 years off between undergrad and law school. If I were you, I would absolutely be sending out resumes, even to places where your grades don't really give you a good shot. Think about it: you have all this meaningful stuff on your resume and there are going to be 23-24 year olds literally with things like "Lifeguard" and "Camp Counselor" on their resume.

Now, it's still going to be an uphill battle because grades still matter most of all, but don't underestimate the power of a full resume. At this point, your main strength is your maturity and experience. Employers ARE interested in those qualities.

So if someone is sitting at say 26% and the firm says Top 20% preferred, do you think that 26% is competitive to land an interview? I'm curious as to what people think about this. How much leeway is there in the "preferred" language?

Transferring / Re: GULC: Admitted Student Site
« on: July 09, 2008, 07:06:37 PM »
My file went decision too after 6 days of not being updated. I also tried to get on the admitted students site for kicks and couldn't. I'm not worried about whether that is a sign, though.

My application was strong, but I also have no expectations about how this transfer will work out. I did great at my current school and enjoy it. I would still take G-Town if accepted, though.

Job Search / Class Rank is out: Did I get screwed out of top 10%?
« on: July 08, 2008, 12:28:31 PM »
My school has a definite hard cutoff for firms that interview. The top firms only interview the top 10 percent at my school.

Tha rankings came out today.

Top 10%: 3.69 and up
My GPA:  3.6896

Only the broad range has been posted. I have not received any notification of where exactly I am.

I check my online transcript. 3.68 is what it says. They rounded down. Apparently I am .0004 from being at a 3.69.

Do you think they may have rounded the 3.69 in the rankings for simplicity's sake or am I really going to miss out interviewing with the best firms because I am 4 ten-thousandths of a point off?

If true, .0004 could actually cost me a lot of interview opportunities. That's messed up.

Do you think I've actually been rounded up and not been notified yet?
