General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: PSA: How to Avoid Being "That" Guy

The self-awareness points are pretty valid. I think the key factor that distinguishes a good-faith participant from a “gunner” is the ability to decide which questions are more appropriate to ask after class.

A clarifying question helps you follow the discussion – whereas a random hypo is more likely to be irrelevant to class discussion and annoying to your peers.

And yes, monologues are annoying.

But the people I find equally as irritating as the gunner(s) are those who – no matter who is talking – suck their teeth and roll their eyes. A gunner is seldom obnoxious 100% of the time. Some of the comments he or she makes are going to be valid. Just realize that if you’re rude to the gunner, your peers will notice your mini-hissy-fit and put you in the same socially inept category.

Mine is Civil Procedure.

My least favorite, by far, is Torts.

What about you?

Same actually! Although Civ Pro is tied with legal writing.

Law School Applications / Re: How Many Apps?
« on: November 08, 2008, 02:07:11 PM »
I applied to over 50 schools.

The only school that didn't give me a fee waiver was my top choice (and the one that I ended up going to!) Even though the extra applications weren't necessary I couldn't say that I didn't have options!

Law School Applications / Re: Calls From Deans
« on: November 08, 2008, 02:04:26 PM »
Them: Hi, is X there?
You: Thats me!
Them: Just calling to congratulate you on your acceptance to Y school!
You: Wow!  Gee Wiz!  Thanks so much!!!
Them: Here is how you get into the admitted students site _______ and our ASW(s) are on Z dates
You: Ok, thanks so much!
Them: Questions?
You: Yes/No
If you have questions they answer them
Them: Congrats again!
You: More graciousness and excitement (fake or real)
End of convo.

Haha, yes. This is how the first call goes.

Now, closer to deposit time (in the spring) expect more harassing calls from deans and student groups (especially if you're a minority).

I'd only worry about prestige snub if going to a recognizable Ivy school. Usually when I tell people I'm going to Michigan I get a muted "who the heck would want to move to Michigan?" type of reaction unless the person has special knowledge of law schools or the university in general.

Same for UMinnesota. The first thing everyone in Miami said when they heard I was going to UMN was "Oh it's GONNA BE COLD!"

I also got some snide remarks from people until they looked at the law school rankings.

Hm. I replied. But I'm not seeing it. So this may be a double post... but, I have a Gateway FX laptop, which is pretty much the business. It's 10+ pounds though, so don't get a laptop tote bag unless you got the shoulder's like King Kamali.

Gateway FX laptop. :)

Although my school has a mandatory laptop program so I'm receiving a HP or Dell or something in the coming weeks.

The Gateway FX is still the thing though - it's like 10lbs.

I'm section B:
Contracts - Schwarcz
Torts - Feld
Civ Pro - Cooper
Con Law I - Kitrosser

I wish they told us what books we needed so we could begin hunting for used copies to save some $$.  Any advice from current students on getting new vs. old books?

I got Section B too! :D

Yay. The efaan was there for me too. I feel like I just signed my life away though  :-\

I'm putting it off to avoid just that feeling!

Anybody else not receive the section assignment yet?

No assignment here...although I just moved to MN and I think they sent my packet to Miami :(
