Where should I go next fall? / Re: 1L Work Load @ T14 vs. 25-75
« on: December 03, 2008, 10:53:34 AM »
U Minnesota student... the school ranks #22.

UMN is unique because it ranks well but it's not competitive. Part of it is Minnesota nice, the other part is that they don't tell us our rank.

We have 4 classes (Torts, CivPro, Conlaw, Contracts) and a pass/fail legal writing.

The work load is breezy, but it really depends on your temperament… some people are happy and stress free and others wake up every morning and shed a tear. (although that's true for any school.)

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: Summer before law school

I was a summer RA... just do something that will let you save the most amount of money without stressing you out. You eat out in law school more than you think...

Be careful about judging a school based on one or two students. Every school has its share of treats and tools.

Ummm... I believe he explicitly says he isnt judging the school based on the two people.  Its a general warning to 1L's that you ARE being watched.  And if people think you're rude/obnoxious that won't bode well for your career prospects.

Their behavior was terrible.  I don't care what school they came from. Every person sitting within 10 feet gave them a look of disappointment.

Oh dear...they caused that bad of a scene?

Hey neo, was there any major crime that occurred on campus in your time at UM?

The crime thing was a joke…more or less, but sure. UMiami had crime. All schools do. There was a student slain a few blocks down from the school. We also had an armed robbery on campus.

But both of those situations were special. The boy murdered had a reputation as a small time drug dealer... that may have had something to do with it. Investigation is pending:
http://www.themiamihurricane.com/2008/11/19/eddie-pieron-memorial-to-take-place-saturday-no-updates-in-murder-case/

And the armed robbery involved a boy who set up his friends. He was hanging out with them when masked muggers approached…

He was found out as the mastermind of the mugging after his friends noticed he mysteriously had his phone back. Doh!

Darrell Messer goes to school in Chicago (DePaul) and occasionally sees blood soaked streets. He’s at http://www.darrellmesser.com/  he occasionally twitters about the chaos on http://twitter.com/dmesser

But the real situation is this: both Miami and Chicago are big cities. You’re going to have crime problems. It’s part of life. Heck, I go to school in Minneapolis and we even have a few muggings per week...

The reason why I decided not to go to Miami for law school is because (like a lot of other posters said) it’s a regional school, and I had no desire to live in Miami.

The Miami library also has horrible hours and the parking situation is dismal. That said, if you want to practice law in Miami, it is the school to go to because of its massive local alumni base.  Unlike Chicago, UMiami has no major competitors in the South Florida market. The closest prestigious school is the University of Florida in Gainesville.

If you go to Chicago you get to compete against Northwestern, UChicago, and DePaul...

Batsakis v. Demotsis (226 S.W.2d 673)- Mere inadequacy of consideration will not void a contract.

General Board / Re: 1 year later....still glad u went to law school?
« on: November 25, 2008, 02:35:18 PM »
so, lots of people have finished 1L now.  hey, lots of people are finishing 2L and 3L now.  so the question to everyone is, are you still glad you decided to go to law school?

there are countless things you could have been doing this last 1,2, or 3 years so are you happy you decided to spend the time at your respective law school?  also are you happy knowing that you've spent this recent time preparing for a career in law?

Yes, I love my school and the work. It’s been a lot of fun!

Well no offense, but neither of those schools are going to have any pull in the CA market.  Maybe if you were like TOP of your class, but otherwise it's just not going to happen.  They are regional schools.

If you want to practice in CA, then go to a regional Cali school.

Second. I went to U Miami undergrad... the law school's facilities aren't the best either. Both cities are expensive. Just decide whether you want snow and crime or hurricanes and crime.

Wow, this is dumb. That's great that you feel like highlighting is a waste of time for you.

I don't necessarily highlight for "comprehension." I highlight so that I can respond in class - if my prof calls on me, I can easily find some relevant info (holding, rules, etc.). It works for me in class.

Second. I highlight in addition to book briefing...
