Where should I go next fall? / Re: Anyone know anything about JAG?« on: February 23, 2006, 10:38:44 AM »so i have my Army JAG interview tomorrow for their summer intern program. I'll take some of these questions and ask them. I have Air Force JAG for the same thing next week. So, how did it go? 7

Good post, but I have to disagree with you about one part. From what I understand, while Army and Air Force JAG are fairly noncompetitive, Navy and Marine JAG are very competitive. Marine JAG is competitive simply because of the physical requirements. Navy JAG is very competitive because they only take 50 students a year. In fact, I know of an African American Yale law school graduate who has a 4.0 from Stanford and a 170+ LSAT who was dinged by Navy on his first attempt at commission.

Where should I go next fall? / Re: UIUC v. Notre Dame« on: February 18, 2006, 12:56:15 PM »
Yes, this list is certainly not complete, but it's a good indicator.
According to LSAC, UIUC has between 230-240. While I was off in my initial assesment, that is a difference of at least 50 people per class. That's a very significant difference. Yes, a third of UIUC students go outside of Illinois for their first jobs, but 2/3 of Notre Dame students go outside of Illinois for their first job and yet ND still seem to place just as many students in the top Chicago law firms as UIUC. But yes, the original poster should visit both. Notre Dame is definitely not for everyone. I'm just responding to a poster's assessment that UIUC places much better in Chicago than ND. I think that is a bit misleading. One, that is a list of only the 20 largest law firms, not really a representative list. Two, Illinois class size is 200. Three, a third of UIUC students go outside of Illinois for their first jobs. 10

That is a rough list of Vault 20 firms. Notre Dame has more total offers than UIUC (15 v. 13) even though Notre Dame has a much smaller class size (if I'm not mistaken, approx. 180 v. 260). Between UIUC and ND, I would go to ND without a second thought, even if there was a discrepency in merit money. ND places just as well as UIUC does in Chicago and places much better elsewhere. No question, for Chicago go to Illinois. ND probably places better outside of IL than Illinois but because of the tuition difference it's really a no brainer. |
