(large swaths of which were taken in our war with Mexico: a trumped-up bullying of our southern "neighbor" instigated by the executive [sound familiar])

don't believe me about the Mexican-American War?  look it up.  Apparently, for Sam Houston and his followers, illegal immigration is ok, if it's white folks heading the other way.

Irrelevant.

Maybe to Americans, but certainly not to Mexicans.  I hadn't actually thought about it's practical relevancy.  I was just pointing out the irony esp. to "minute man" Lou Dobbs types

yes!  let's keep the impoverished brown people caged up behind the Rio Grand and Sonoran Deserts.  Let's not find a way to colectively help people earn a life of dignity doing grueling jobs Americans won't consistently do because we Americans had the good fortune of being born inside our political boundaries

1L job search / Re: Questions about a state Supreme Court clerkship??
« on: June 23, 2008, 11:06:33 AM »
depends on your state's court as to who/when they hire.  And not to be the board DB, but clerkships and INTERNSHIPS with courts are much, much different things.  It sounds like your talking about a summer internship.

a clerkship with a SSC would be a full-time job for a member of the bar that paid (relatively) nice scratch.

BTW, there's a ton of clerkship (not internship) resources on American Law's website

Law School Applications / Re: Duke or UNC?

I'd like to choose the school that leaves open the most options=Duke if you're pretty certain that you don't want to do relatively low paying PI/govt work (which Duke's giant debt load will preclude)

General Board / Re: Anyone doing Dual MBA JD degrees?
« on: June 17, 2008, 09:41:20 AM »
You need to consider what school you're talking about.  An MBA from anything less than a Top 20 is almost worthless.  I thought about a JD/MBA, but decided not to do the combined program because my school's MBA program is not even ranked.  I'm at a T-20 law school, and I'll likely be starting at a T-5 MBA program right after I graduate from law school.  I know it's  a lot of school, but an MBA at anything less than a T-20 is a waste.

So...if my LS's MBA is ranked 21 its alomost worthless, but if it moves to 20 its full of worth? whose doing the "rankings" anyway?

Law School Applications / Re: NCCU on LSAC data search?
« on: June 08, 2008, 11:09:08 AM »
I'm a "white dude" going to NCCU in the fall, and i worried last year about NCCU's seeming disposition to reject a 158 and accept a 143.  naturally I worried it could be race based.

I still don't know about that, but their application/PS instructions clearly suggest that they want to hear about your commitment to one or more of the following: Public Interest, Law as a "profession" to help the underserved, giving back to the Durham Area.

I spoke with Mr. Anderson director of recruitment.  He emphasized writing skills and the PS statement.  I asked about state residency in admissions decisions, and he indicated he didn't believe "they" (admit committee?)considered that in decisions.

As an important aside, I can't remember ever indicating what race I am. I almost never specify on any form, and I don't think I did in any material I sent to NCCU. So it's possible, at least, that that is not considered as well.

I'll actually be up the road at NCCU.  When is Campbell moving their law school to downtown Raleigh?

A Civil Action by Harr.  You may even enjoy it.

Bill, I just finished reading that book, and WOW!

I loved it, by which I mean I am pissed off and very disturbed.  I went into it carte blanche as well, never saw the movie, and had no idea of the outcome, believe it or not.

I'm 0L, but I'd think that book at least gives some good idea about civil procedure
