Law Firms / Safety in numbers
« on: April 13, 2010, 02:36:31 PM »
As many of you know, times are tough for newly minted attorneys and laid off attorneys.  With unemployment at a 20-year high, and in the midst of a recession, there are many who are very discouraged at what the job market has to offer, but still have hope for the future.  After all, we all did put ourselves through three years in law school, invested thousands of dollars of debt and many hours studying for the bar to reach our goal of becoming a licensed attorney.

But the reality is that we have mounting debt, families, and other financial obligations weighing down on our shoulders without many prospects for jobs.  We have done everything humanely possible to find a job -- e.g. networking, job postings, career services, recruiters, all with little or no luck.  Simply put, many of us (myself included) sometimes feel completely lost.

Just curious, for those in NYC, is there an existing group of people that meet to talk about their experiences looking for stable, permanent legal employment?  If not, would anyone be interested in something like this?  I feel like that a group like this would help empower each other to continue pressing forward despite our lack of success; not to make each other more depressed than we already are.  I also feel that actually hearing other people going through the same thing and finding solutions together would be mutually beneficial to all; there is safety in numbers.  Any thoughts?

Thinking about joining an insurance defense, but I've heard it's "shitlaw"?  I appreciate any perspective from people who have gone into ID or knows of people who have.  Thanks!

L.L.M. Board / The pros and cons of an LLM
« on: January 31, 2010, 03:35:00 PM »
Hi,

I am a recent grad from a tier 3 law school from California, in the top 30%, no journal, and now in NYC.  I am considering applying for an LLM at the top law schools here in NYC, but am not sure if it's worth the time and money.  I've been looking for jobs since passing the NY bar with no luck.  Out of thousands of resumes that I sent out, I got 2 interviews.  TWO.

What do you guys think?  Is a LLM where you live worth it if you came from a tier 3 school, where no one where you live knows your school, where you don't have alumni here, and where job prospects are pretty crappy?

Also, if an LLM is a good idea, what are my prospects of getting into a top-tier LLM like NYU or Columbia?  Just looking for some direction. Thanks!

Law Firms / Advice for Entry-Level Attorneys
« on: September 25, 2009, 10:24:49 AM »
For those recent grads who are still waiting to hear back from the bar on whether they passed the bar - what are you guys doing in the meantime?

If you're looking for jobs, how so?  I've mass mailed small to large firms, looked through job searches on the internet, and have been networking with my alums and professional associations since taking the bar - with absolutely no luck.  I've invested a lot of time and energy in doing these things as best as I can, and it doesn't seem like my best is enough.

I was thinking maybe if I wait to do all of these things until AFTER I get my bar results (and pass hopefully), then I'll get the responses I'm looking for.  I dunno.  For now, I'll settle for a shot of whiskey and a hug.

3L job search / What are my job prospects?
« on: June 13, 2008, 08:36:44 PM »
Hello,

I'm concerned about my future job prospects after I graduate this coming Spring 2009.  So far, I have a 3.13 Accum GPA at a T3 law school on the West Coast, and I'm trying to move east to New York City (for my wife, who wants to be closer to her family).  No law review or moot court (but I applied for them for my 3L year - haven't heard back from them yet), but I do have an externship  under my belt with a Federal Judge, have 5 years of paralegal experience (1 of which was in NYC) and am a Notary Public there.  Currently I'm splitting my summer working for the Prosecutor's Office and a small PI firm.  What are my chances at scoring a job in NYC after graduation?  I'm not holding my breath for any lucrative big firm jobs, but I'll take any job that comes my way.  I just want to know what my chances are at this point.  Thanks.

Does anyone know whether people generally do better or worse on the MRRE in the spring as opposed to the fall or summer?

2L job search / Job Search Anxiety
« on: February 29, 2008, 07:13:41 PM »
Are most people feelin the pressure like I am trying to find a job for this summer?  I'm in the top 25% of my class, go to tier 3 school, have five years of paralegal experience, a judicial extenership with a federal court, and am having trouble landing a good summer associate position at a firm.  I'm lookin for jobs locally but there's nothing available.  I particpated in FAll and Spring OCI with no luck.  I've mass mailed 200+ law firms with no luck.  Networkign thus far has produced nothing.  I really would like to have a job offer before graduating, and without a job this summer, I feel like my odds are better at winning the lotto.

If you're a 2L w/o a job right now, what do you think?  Is there a realistic chance, that as a 3L, you'll be able to find a job pre-graduation?  Or will this anxiety continue after graduation and after you take the bar?  Is there no mercy?
