General Off-Topic Board / Curly's Application
« on: January 13, 2006, 02:09:37 PM »
And I do realize this is just about as narcissistic as it gets ;):

1- Do you like Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

2- Do you speak Spanish?

3- Are you a good dancer? Merengue, salsa?

4- Name the movie: "My name is Andrew Shepherd, and I AM the President."

5- Do you love Jesus? Do you think about him in the shower? Are we talking about the same Jesus? And no, I don't mean that Mexican guy.

6- Do you think, as Britney Spears does, that we should all support our President?

7- Do you watch the Daily Show?

8- Are you addicted to some kind of spectator sport? Will you make me watch? (If yes, will you patiently explain it to me over and over again?)

9- Would you say you are funny? Please provide evidence.

10- Are you smart? Knowledge in a particular area I know nothing about, such as computers, stocks or cars, is highly desirable. Also, love of reading will give you extra points.

11- What is your favorite drink? This one's important. ;)

12- Do you have, or do you anticipate having, a good income? I'm just sayin'...I may not be making much money right off the bat.

13- Do you like KITTENS? (The real kind, not the sex kind).

Hmmm...I'll stop at lucky thirteen and see how it goes ;P.

General Off-Topic Board / What does it mean when a guy sends flowers?

So...this just happened to me, and I'm trying not to jump to strange conclusions. What do you all think?

Law School Admissions / For those who went to Harvard/MIT undergrad
« on: December 20, 2005, 10:29:19 AM »
Ok, this is going to be a random question, but someone I know just told me that her daughter was offered merit scholarships at Harvard and MIT for college because she was the valedictorian of her high school class, but then decided to go to community college (in Boston, where she lives) because her boyfriend was going to community college.

I refuse to believe this. So, question is, do Harvard and MIT even GIVE merit scholarships to undergrads?

This lady made it sound like it was unsolicited, too (as in, her daughter didn't necessarily APPLY to Harvard/MIT, she was just being courted by both). This sounds like BS to me, but I just wanted to check.

General Off-Topic Board / I HATE AMERICAN AIRLINES
« on: December 16, 2005, 04:45:18 PM »
I'm trying to go home. I've been trying to go home for TWO days. American Airlines has now cancelled two of the flights they've put me on; still no sign of an apology of any kind. I've been stuck lurking at airports and am now in Boston (hey all you Bostonites!) until TOMORROW, waiting for the next flight home I can find. I've already been on 3, get it, three planes in two days. I still have one more 4-hour flight to go.

I cannot fathom what kind of "customer service school" these people went to. I understand weather. I understand delays. I understand cancellations. I do NOT understand the grumpy look the airline person gives me when I ask her how I can get home. I do NOT understand how somehow it is MY fault that HER day is ruined, and how SHE has the gall to be cross with ME when I'm the one who's stuck at the airport wondering aimlessly and getting phone calls from my crying mother who I haven't seen in months and who just cancelled a whole fun beach-hotel weekend she had planned for me (and paid for) because I won't be home in time for it.

I utterly HATE, and DETEST American Airlines. I hope they go bankrupt. Again. Forever. AAARGGGHH.

Sorry. I'm done being angry now.

Law School Admissions / Who lives in Boston/Cambridge?
« on: November 20, 2005, 09:27:48 AM »
I'm in Cambridge right now. I'll be here til Wednesday. What do I do? Where do I go?

And, yes, I've considered doing the requisite tour at the big H, but I'm still too afraid of getting dinged...I'll visit after I know it's a possibility. In the meantime, I'll stare in awe from afar.

Any bar suggestions? Cute restaurants? Anything?

Law School Admissions / Living with a significant other?
« on: October 25, 2005, 07:50:04 PM »
My apologies to the mods if this isn't the right forum to post this on, but I didn't know which one was appropriate. Here goes:

Is anyone considering living with a significant other during law school? I don't mean necessarily people who are married (because I'm hoping married couples can grind through anything) but a long term boyfriend/girlfriend.

More to the point: has anyone DONE this? How well does it work? I've heard all the horror stories of people breaking up because they have no time for a relationship and they want to concentrate on school. Is it better/worse when you actually live with the person?

I'm just looking for anecdotal evidence. My mind's pretty much made up as to what I'm going to do, but I'd just like to see if there are some common pitfalls to avoid, or some encouraging stories or something.

Thanks guys!

Law School Admissions / So I just read Anna Ivey and...
« on: October 22, 2005, 12:37:23 PM »
God was that a mistake.

I've already sent in all my apps and apparently I've made so many mistakes (like "theme" type mistakes) that I have no hope whatsoever anywhere ;). I realize that's an exaggeration, but that's pretty much what the book is telling me--I didn't exploit my resume enough, I may have used the precisely wrong PS subject, my LORs may have not have been enthusiastic enough, my major's too easy,  etc.

Then I called my boyfriend for some perspective (i.e. "everything will be fine, i read your PS and it's great, Anna Ivey is not omniscient" comforting bs) and he responds with "Well, can you tell them to throw all your stuff away and resubmit your entire app?"

I'm afraid I'll be one of those LSN anomalies with good numbers and terrible results.

Conclusion: Read Anna Ivey's book. BEFORE you apply. :P

I sent in my apps a few weeks ago, and nearly all my schools (12/13) have already requested my report, which had 2 LORs in. That means my applications are complete at all these schools (they haven't all notified me yet, but they have everything they said they needed).

However, now my 3rd LOR has come in to LSAC. I'm not sure when/if those 12 schools will get to see the third one, which I think is probably really good. To add to this problem, on the apps that asked for the names of 2 recommenders, I wrote down the THIRD LOR guy as one of them. That means that right now these schools have 2 LORs, one from someone I wrote down as a recommender, and one from some "strange" person.

So the question is: how do I find out when schools will request a 2nd report? I know some of them do it only on certain days, and others may not do it at do I figure out which ones do what?
