Financial Aid / Re: Question about Stafford Loans
« on: May 09, 2006, 09:15:27 AM »
I think a couple of answers:

you cannot request any more of anything than your total expected costs, which is tuition plus everything else a LS thinks we need. So, in theory, you can request the full amount of stafford, 18500, even if your tuition is only, say, 5,000. However, if tuition plus room/board etc only comes to 15,000, then you cannot request a full stafford of 18,500, since the LS did not certify your budget at that level...otherwise, you can borrow up to the full amount on your financial aid summary...

stafford, as noted, can thus be used for anything...its given to school, they subtract what you owe them, and give the rest to you

I think thats a good position to be in. I dont think it will fall a lot out of T1...though it might fall more. Its new faculty thing had 3-4 hired for next year, so thats a good catch--if it can keep adding 2-3 a yr thats pretty impressive, esp for such a small state school.

Does anyone know the exact process for this? I think its:

1 - compare lenders, pick one

2- apply to the one you picked as 'best' (or maybe a couple, since some don't provide exact rates until you apply ie student loan express, who says you can get a rate as low as 6.5%!)

---here is where i get fuzzy----

3- notify school of which lender you picked (or so uconn tells me)/lender contacts school for verification of need

4-submit another MPN to sallie may, which uconn says it not available but some websites already have the pdf- the MPN is the same as the undergrad PLUS one, though we fill out our info in the 'parent' area, since parents arent needed for this...

Does this seem right? Uconn has some info, but its kinda confusing. Any one else at other schools have any detailed directions?

never mind, i found that quote. I think it needs to be taken in perspective though...it is all correct, though I do not think as dire as it sounds in isolation. Yes, it is a state school, but conn. is dumping tons of money into their school system and uconn law is their only state law school...i also think alumni money needs to be more forthcoming, like the gift by Chase, which is going to have hantraft hall renamed in her honor (though there is nothing more i dislike than renaming bldings that are already named). I think the potential move to the blding currently owned by the state will also eventually happen, giving the LS a pretty large footing on that campus, with the possibility of expansion always on the horizon in the soccer field area.....oh yes, as for the library: its new, so this isnt a leak that has to do with age. some contractor goofed up and the windows all leak pretty bad, so they are all being replaced....i come from an OLD school, so i know what a leak vs 'a leak' is...

oh jeez....though, btw, doesn't looking at that really make it seem like all LSs really are the same? People, faces, comments etc? Campuses seem nice enough...basically, the difference between cooley and harvard is which one opens more doors...

laur4447-

Yes they did pay...when I checked in I gave them my credit car, i think also ID, and then my syr admitted students day 'receipt', which came in the mail after i had rsvp. The hotel kept that receipt and I was never actually billed. Thats the way the Marx did it at least....
