Job Search / proofreading
« on: January 17, 2008, 05:17:55 PM »
In preparing for OCI, a lot of firms are wanting a writing sample. However, legal writing is a course the SECOND semester rather than the first at my school. We did do a memo (with little guidance) that counted for not much in our classes last semester -- and I'm wondering if I should submit this.

Does anyone want to proofread it for me or at least give me a critique on what an employer might think?

Thanks :)

Job Search / 1L job, prosecutor's office?
« on: January 17, 2008, 05:16:39 PM »
I sent out letters and resumes to a variety of places, including large firms, government agencies, small/medium firms, etc.

However, I've gotten several rejections, and many haven't responded. I was, however, offered an OK-paying position at a mid-sized county prosecutor's office. Will this look pretty good on my resume in terms of my 2L summer? I think I'm more interested in civil stuff, but I don't want firms to think I just want to do criminal law if they see that on my resume.

Current Law Students / taking notes from casebook
« on: January 17, 2008, 04:56:22 PM »
does anyone actually take notes from commentary and notes after cases in the casebooks? i did last semester, but it basically consisted of typing what i'd underlined into a word file. i'm wondering if i should just use my book when i'm making my outline instead of doing that extra work to type up the notes. it DID get me to go back over the material

Man, I'm exactly the same. I can't get myself to be motivated like I was last semester. I'm behind in a few of my classes. Hopefully I can utilize this three-day weekend to get caught up and such. Blah. We still don't get our grades until next Friday.

Still no grades at my school yet. They said something about our getting them next week. I'm truly terrified.

Thank you, that's reassuring. I just have no experience with the Constitution (I know, sad --> crappy high school and subsequent non-related major!).

Current Law Students / wtf con law
« on: January 10, 2008, 06:17:09 PM »
OK, this is my first week back, and I am completely confused by con law. I have to browse the Web for summaries of every single case we read because I have no idea what they're saying. I got the Chemerinksy treatise (although it's an older edition), but won't be able to really look at it until the weekend because I've been so slammed with reading so far.

Anyone else have this experience at the beginning of the semester, yet still come out OK in the end? So frustrating!

I bought the treatise used fr $15 --  but it's the 2002 version. How outdated and unhelpful is this going to be?
