Current Law Students / Re: 1L with grades, need some advice.

I think you're getting upset over nothing. You are in the top half of one of the better law schools in the country after one semester. You have 5 more semesters of grades left to go, so if you work a little harder, maybe you can edge your GPA up a bit. I don't think the market is so horrible that people who graduate in the top half of T25 schools will be begging for work! Also, maybe you'll find you really enjoy some class you're taking this semester, like property or some such, and you might pursue that . . .

Current Law Students / Should I try to transfer?
« on: January 19, 2008, 04:14:24 PM »
I'm a 1L at Catholic and just earned a 3.7 gpa for the first semester (our curve is B-). I think it might be top ten percent based on my conversations with upperclassmen, but of course, it's impossible to know yet.

Anyway, would it be a good idea for me to try to transfer up to a higher ranked school? I guess the other possibility would be to try and get some money to stay where I am. I am currently paying for the entire cost of law school, which will be like 55K for the first year at Catholic. So maybe, assuming I can keep up the good work, they'll give me some money for next year. Apparently the amount of aid changes from year to year, but the top 25 percent gets something. It's sad to think about transferring, since I've made lots of friends, but ultimately I need to do the best for myself that I can.

So, should I think about transferring? Which schools would be worth the hassle? My LSAT rather sucked (mid 150s). I don't know how much that matters for transfer students, but I thought I'd give you some demographic info before asking your advice. Would I be wasting 80 dollars if I sent an application to GULC? What other schools might take me? Anyway, I'd appreciate any advice you might have. :)

But it's very unlikely that you will do a good job and "really nail it" if you don't know how to spell judgment.

The name "Summary Judgment" was already taken so I used the alternate spelling in order to make a name. Nice of you to notice though. I bet you're a real prick.

I've finished two full weeks, and so far so good.  But, the thing is that since everyone is graded on a curve, it isn't good enough just to learn everything, you need to somehow learn enough to outperform your classmates on the exam.  I think that's why law school is stressful.  In college, you knew if you did a good job and really nailed it, you'd get an A.  In law school, you could feel the same way and get a C, depending on your classmates.

I should have been more clear: Catholic University, not Colorado.

Current Law Students / DC prospects?

Hi, everyone.  This is my first post.  I just started at CU and was wondering if there are any of our grads (or anyone else who might know) floating around these forums who might give me a heads up about what to expect in the job market down the road.  I'm guessing from the little bit of research I've done that Big Law is only really something that the top 10-25 percent of the class has much chance with (I know Law Review, etc also matters).  Obviously, I'll try to be at the top, but so will everyone else, no doubt.  Do medium sized DC firms hire many of our grads, and what is the average starting salary at such a medium sized firm?  I know that's a lot of questions, but I'll very much appreciate any information anyone might have.
