Hypothesis:  law school amounts to an incredibly regressive transfer of wealth to the literati.

Incoming 1Ls / Re: Why do most law review students take Federal Courts?

Yeah I was just wondering if law review students tended to gravitate towards any other specific classes other than Federal Courts.

It depends on your school, of course, but --

Conflict of Laws
Jurisprudence
Legislation

The corporate types among them will also often take UCC classes, Securities Regulation, and tax classes.

1. Congrats, Mu!  Yay!

2. Good luck, Matthies!

3. I loved, nay, LOVED, simply ate up, the Tales Of The City books when I was in my late adolescence (though for some reason I am scared to read Michael Tolliver Lives).  I highly recommend them in addition to, perhaps alongside, the miniseries.  (Olympia Dukakis is pretty amazing, though, isn't she?)

EDIT for clarity

Wow, P, that is a pretty sweet avatar. Nice find!

All credit should go to Tom Terrific, who found it for me.

I need to try to get some zzs.  I'll try to dream good things for my Mets, for your sake and mine, but it will be hard. Maybe I will grow out my eyebrows until the Mets hit .500.  (jk.  I would never.)

Just a note to report my delight at my past (and long-forgotten) brilliance:  I ordered the fancy warranty where the techie comes to my house to fix my computer.  Amazing.

My firm looks at undergrad school.  Those from Ivy League undergrads going to T14 schools are labeled "superstars" and I think are often given preferential treatment.  (at least, that's how is has been in years past)

really?

clearly, i've been misinformed.

I had heard the same as you, hooloovoo, though admittedly this -- biglaw recruiting -- isn't really my arena.  I know a lot of people are very loyal to their colleges and will bump up alums if they have any say, but I don't think of this as an HYP-wide or Ivy-wide phenomenon.  Also, aren't Ivy/top LAC alums a dime a dozen in most top-tier law schools where firms are recruiting?  I know that even at my T2, there were at least five Ivy alumni in my small section of 18 or so (only one HYP, though).  In any case, I guess different firms look at things differently.

Yep, I totally understand about the warranty. I've fought that battle before. So, the fan's not spinning at all when you try to start it up? Does it even act like it's powering on, then cut out, or just not power on at all? If it's the latter, you can try the battery thing to see if that will jump start it--that seems to fix a lot of problems with laptops. But if that doesn't work, then your best option is to send it in.

I don't usually hear the fan (it's not as noisy as my old ThinkPad's fan), so I'm not sure if it comes on at all when I turn on my computer. The computer only stays on for a few seconds because it shuts down after I get the black screen with the "fan error."  It doesn't look good!

(And thank you for the advice about removing the battery.  I did so earlier when I was trying to make sure it wasn't overheated, and it still wouldn't start.  I hope it's ready for a trip to China!)
