Hello!  I'm not sure if anyone is still checking this site, but I was wondering what sections you all are in.

A lot of people (not specifically at Temple, but just in general) have had trouble connecting to networks using Vista.  The Business edition is supposed to have enhanced connectivity and better backup features.

I really want to get Vista. Is it really that bad? I'm going to go and purchase my laptop within the next two weeks at Best Buy and outside of completing assignments, I am lost as far as computers go. Should I really go with XP? Will I really be in that much trouble if I do get Vista?

I don't think you're in trouble if you get Vista, it's just not the recommended operating system.  I guess it could be troublesome during exams if they don't have everything smoothed out by then.  If you go to Best Buy, though, I doubt you're even going to have the option of getting XP.  The computers there are all pre-configured and will be loaded up with Vista.  Even people configuring their own computers are starting to have trouble getting XP, so I'd be extremely surprised if you're able to find it on an off-the-shelf model.  Just make sure to get (or upgrade to) Vista Business.

I got XP.  When I ordered my computer, the rep said that once '08 comes, you won't be able to buy XP anymore, so I thought it best to get it now, and then I can upgrade if and when I choose to rather than being stuck with an OS I might not like and not being able to downgrade.  It was a tough decision, but the more I hear about Vista, the happier I am that I'm staying with XP for now.

Wooshi, the 16th or 17th would be great for me!  I'm already doing C.C.S. somewhere on the 15th with some ex-(as of today!)coworkers, but two happy hours in one week couldn't hurt, right?  I'm open to wherever people want to go.

There are lots of great places in Center City.  A lot depends on how many people plan to go and what kind of drinks everyone would like (general pub stuff, specialty drinks, etc).  There's a great thing on Wednesdays from 5-7 during the summer called Center City Sips, where tons of restaurants do a cheap appetizer, mixed drink, wine and beer menu.  I know there's a website for it, but I don't know the address offhand.  But it'll give you a good idea of what's around, other than basic pubs.

No Facebook for me, but I'd be very interested in a happy hour!  I'll be out of town until the 15th, so anytime between then and the start of school would be great for me.  If you all get together before then, I guess I'll just meet you when school starts.  In the meantime, if the people on Facebook agree on a date/time, would someone PM me to let me know?  Thanks!

Damn.  That must have happened since I talked to them, which admittedly was quite awhile ago.  I went with XP both because of of Temple not approving Vista and because the Lenovo rep said that he couldn't, in good conscience, recommend Vista to anyone (he sounded like he really hated it).  But this backtracking by the computer people at Temple probably means that now I'll have to pay to upgrade it sooner rather than later.  Doesn't make me happy.

I lived just off Rittenhouse Square for awhile and parking was a NIGHTMARE.  More often than not, I couldn't get a nearby spot and had to walk 8+ blocks (almost a mile) home from my car.  I never wanted to move the car because then I'd need to find a spot again, so I pretty much didn't go anywhere I couldn't walk/cab (thus defeating the whole purpose of having my car).  It's not much better in any of the other "desirable" areas, and unless something has changed recently, the city doesn't cap the number of parking permits they issue, so there could be 500 permits issued for a zone with only 200 street spots.  Unless you're willing to pay for a spot in a garage or lot, I really really don't recommend having a car in Center City.  Plus, insurance on a car in the city is through the roof.

A couple friends of mine live around 10th and Carpenter, near the Italian Market area.  They rarely have trouble finding parking, but the cars have been broken into.  Another friend has had good luck in the Art Museum area, but it really depends on what part you're in -- closer to the Parkway, it's much more difficult to find a spot, but too far up starts getting kind of sketchy.  And most of the people I know who live up there own houses with garages, so they don't count.

Where I live, it takes 30 minutes to the Temple train stop on the R5, and about the same to drive into Center City (would be about 40 minutes to drive to Temple).  It really isn't that much further away from Center City than Manayunk is, but the parking is definitely easier.  I can't really speak to other areas because I don't know much about their parking situations.

I just wanted to let everyone know, in case you're planning to buy a new computer, that Temple recommends us to stay with XP.  The specs aren't up on the website yet, but the woman I corresponded with said that while Vista will work for regular classroom stuff, if your computer has a problem during an exam and you're running Vista, they won't be able to help you.  She said you may be able to handwrite the remainder of the exam if you have time left, but from the sounds of it, if the problem happens at the end of the exam, you're pretty much SOL.

I think I'm getting my new computer pretty soon (probably before they post the official recommendations), which is why I asked them.  But I think this is pretty important to know sooner than July!
