It definitely has helped me at work.  I write arbitrations at my job for arguments on liability between 2 insurance companies.  You wouldn't believe the assumptions people make!!!  They were like the EASY LR questions!!!!

I will have worked for 3 years by the time I set foot in ls.  I am going because I have always known I wanted to go.  I just didn't want to be an UG yahoo who sets foot in ls w/o work experience.  These past 3 years were invaluable for ls.  I cannot imagine graduating from LS, never having worked in the "real world" before.  I have learned a tremendous amount about people and business practices.  UG just can't provide that.

The reason I have always known I want to go to law school is that I enjoy adversarial environments.  I enjoy working hard, competition, and analytical tasks.  I also love to research a lot in ways that would drive most folks crazy.  I also acknowledge that the legal field is no place to hide from working w/ people.  I also am excited about the prospect of working with other intelligent individuals in a business to business setting.  Most of all, I enjoy reading about and studying the law.  It is fascinating to see how the law affects almost every transaction and interaction in society.

I actually spent a good deal of time in my personal statement talking about my need to work for awhile to KNOW that I want to go to ls.  I knew it was an awesome thing to write about since most kids really don't think about it.  They get scared to graduate their UG and they freak out and go to ls.  I emphasized how much time I actually put into the decision...over 10 years.

What grade do you teach?  I taught 4th grade in East Palo Alto for a year.  (If you don't know East Palo Alto, it is a very poor area right next to Palo Alto, arguably one of the wealthier areas in Cali.)

It was BY FAR the hardest year of my life.  LS will be cake compared to that.

I did the same thing w/ my personal statement.  I wrote a 4 page statement and had a 2 & 3 page version.  I also modified the last paragraph for each school.  Just make sure you send the right one to the right school.  I hear that is a common and embarassing mistake!!!   :-[

You are NOT a loser!  You're a Midwestern hero!  I grew up in WI but I am here in Cali right work.

Please clarify: Is it pathetic that I envy you?

The only bright spot for me is that 6 days from now, I am quitting my job and going to Rome.   ;D :D ;D

Choosing the Right Law School / Re: Hastings v. 3rd tier with $$$

I agree with the previous post.  This is hardly a rush move to Cali.  I have moved at least 15 times in the past 6 years...piece of cake.

I am going to Hastings, so I may be biased, but I would definitely say, go to Hastings.  It will afford you many more opportunities and pave the way for an excellent career.  I think anyone can succeed from a third tier as is just more difficult.  In the grand scheme of things, if you come out making 125K, this difference won't mean much to you.  If you come out of a tier 3 making 70K, well, it will make up the difference in the first year.

PS  I would also evaluate where you want to practice.

I had a friend who was in grad school while I was in undergrad.  When he found out I was going to be making 35K right out of college, he was amazed!!! That is pathetic.  There is lots of ignorance in undergrad.

Best of luck to you all on your careers and ls.  One of my best friends dropped out because he hated it.  That is why I started this thread.
