General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: Patent bar anybody?
« on: January 10, 2006, 05:59:45 PM »
I would like to study and take the patent bar this summer, but I still need to figure out where to get study materials, sign up for the test, etc.

You can purchase study courses from Kayton or PLI for around $2k. I'm reluctant to spent that much on something that isn't necessarily useful to me at the moment, especially when I can get the same course at a slightly discounted student rate once I'm enrolled in law school. My plan is to self-study and see how far I get by summer, and either take the test or wait till 1L summer to take a real course. If you don't plan on taking a course, you should at least read the important sections of the MPEP and practice taking old exams (both avaible from the PTO website).

Financial Aid / Another EFC question
« on: January 09, 2006, 06:13:05 PM »
So based on the EFC calculator I found, I qualify under the simplified needs test because my income is below a certain level. Therefore, assets (bank accounts, homes, etc) are ignored. My question is, if this is true, could I theoretically own a $1M home and have another $1M in the bank and not be expected to use any of it to pay for tuition as long as I make less than a certain amount each year?

Financial Aid / Need Access Signature Required?
« on: January 08, 2006, 12:18:50 AM »
Those of you who've completed the Need Access form online, is there anything to print out and sign (either yourself or your parents) or can everything be submitted online without signatures? I remember that for the FAFSA, I used to use an electronic PIN and then print out a form for my parents to sign and was wondering if this was similar.

Financial Aid / Re: Quick FAFSA question
« on: January 05, 2006, 04:53:53 PM »
wait, so if I want to be considered for need based grants, it's ok if I don't submit parental info on the FAFSA, as long as I do so on the Need Access?

Financial Aid / When to file Need Access?
« on: January 03, 2006, 01:47:23 PM »
Many schools have a mid-march deadline for financial aid applications.  Do I need to have tax returns for myself and my parents on hand in order to fill out the Need Access application, or can I estimate using last year's numbers?

Wait List / Re: Deferred NYU
« on: December 28, 2005, 01:36:21 PM »
I'll try to target each school with the letter, adding a few things about why I'm interested in that school. For the essay, I thought I could use it as an opportunity to reveal more about myself and my interests rather than rehashing my law related interests and aspirations as I did in my personal statement.  Just an effort to differentiate myself further from the other applicants, hopefully it'll pay off.

Wait List / Re: Submitting additional materials, how much is too much?
« on: December 28, 2005, 10:43:32 AM »
Unfortunately I've already graduated and I already submitted one LOR from one of my bosses, so I don't think a new one would add much. I think I do have some things to say about what I've accomplished since graduating, so I'm leaning towards the essay.
