General Board / HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: June 02, 2006, 01:31:03 AM »
AHHHHH!!!  I am completely and utterly frustrated trying to make a decision here.

I am currently trying to decide between George Mason and the University of Iowa.  I really, desperately need some feedback from current law students (anywhere) as to how either school is perceived in the legal community.

THANK YOU, so much, for the help.  I really appreciate it!!

Some of the reasons I'm having trouble (in the event that it's helpful):
- GMU recently lost its head of admissions, Anne Richards, who was instrumental in moving the school up the ranks (will the school fall in rankings? is the school gaming the numbers?  does she think the school has done as well as it's going to do in terms of the rankings?)
- While visiting GMU I couldn't quite put my finger on why the school has made it to number 37 in the rankings (is it because of the Nobel Prize winning economists? increased selectivity in admissions? or, again, is it because they're gaming the numbers? <- though it's hard to believe this could be the only reason)
- UI is in Iowa (enough said, I think)
- Univ. of Iowa is ranked higher, but has far fewer (approximately half) the number of corporate law classes (which I want to specialize in)
- Univ. of Iowa doesn't offer courses in Mergers and Acquisitions, which I am very much interested in and would like to work in this area after graduation.
- The cost is not an overwhelming factor for either school
- NALP has more corporate law firms recruiting from UI than GMU, but GMU has more firms recruiting on the east coast (I don't mind networking to find a job, though, and have ties to the area in which I want to work)

U of Iowa / Iowa - Innov. Bus. & Law (please help)
« on: May 16, 2006, 07:20:18 PM »
Hey there...

First things first, I hope everyone is doing okay after the tornado...

Second, I'm wondering if anyone can offer any comments on Iowa's Innovation, Business, and Law program that I've read about.  I really want to study corporate law, with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions.  I've looked at the course listing on ISIS for the 05-06 academic year but didn't see the "takeovers, mergers, & acquisitions" course mentioned in the program brochure.  Has anyone taken this course or know anything about it - like when it was last offered?

I would also really appreciate any feedback about the quality of the corporate law-related courses.  I am totally stuck between Iowa and George Mason.  I would love it if someone could talk to some of the positive things about Iowa as Mason's course listing seems to have a wider variety of corporate law related classes, M&A in particular.

Thank you (SO MUCH) in advance for any help you can offer!!

George Mason U / George Mason - Courses
« on: May 16, 2006, 07:09:12 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping to get some feedback from some current GMU Law students regarding the quality of the classes, and if possible, the corporate law classes in particular (but anything would help).  I'm really on the fence right now about attending GMU versus the University of Iowa.  Ultimately I want to attend the school with the stronger Mergers and Acquisitions-related coursework.

So far I've researched the courses that were offered throughout the 2005-2006 academic year and GMU seems to have more of the corporate-related courses.  And, I was particularly pleased to see that the school has a Corporate Acquisitions class in particular.  Have people been pleased with their coursework in this area?

Does the school do a good job of offering a variety of classes or does it recycle the same set of classes semester after semester (this is what happened in my two prior graduate programs)?

Thank you in advance for the help... I really appreciate it!!
