1L job search / Re: Applying for 1L summer jobs before grades are out
« on: December 27, 2006, 11:21:44 PM »
I am interested in working (for no money, so I guess you would call it volunteering) at a public interest organization.  Our career services people said that it was no problem for me to wait until winter break to send resumes, so that's what I did.  I was more concerned with getting good grades (especially since our exams were 12/7 to 12/22) rather than chasing a paying biglaw firm job that probably wouldn't materialize anyway.

We shall see how that strategy worked out in about a month.

:)

What I want to know is whether anyone has ever gotten a paying firm job as a 1L BEFORE grades come out.  They may interview, but all the 2L's I talked to said that no one received offers until early February after grades.

General Board / Re: Legal Writing Grade
« on: December 27, 2006, 10:30:26 PM »
Ours was only 1 credit.  I know I got a B+ on our main assignment (worth 60% of the grade) and an A on the rest of the assignments, so I think I have a shot an an A- in that class.  The firm I worked at as a paralegal used to sort attorney resumes based on legal writing grades alone.

eek! thats pretty scary...I hope I pull at least a B- in LW..there's always next semester. It was my professor's first time teaching, and she favored a VERY particualr writing style that I just couldnt pick up on  in time... :'(

It was my instructor's first time too.  From what I have heard, she graded our memo's way more harshly than other sections were graded.  For instance, no one got an A on the first submission, where other sections had several.  I think it sucks that they curve the whole 1L class against each other, when some of the instructors grade based on different criteria!

Studying and Exam Taking / Re: Done with exams!!
« on: December 26, 2006, 11:34:17 PM »
I got done on Friday (yes, you read that correctly...we had our last exam on 12/22)

I think I did OK, but am amused that the class I was so concerned about (Contracts) may have been the exam I did best at.  I felt really good about that one, even though the whole thing was about franchises.  (Our prof's specialty area)

Thanks everyone.  I think I just needed some reassurance.  I appreciate the pep talk.  I am already half way done with Contracts, and its going well.

Studying and Exam Taking / Am I doomed if I am starting outlining today?
« on: December 01, 2006, 09:25:15 PM »
I had the flu for 2 weeks and then took the past 2 to get caught up on what I missed.  As a result, I am just starting outlining today.  Classes end next week and my first final is 12/12.  Am I totally screwed?  Any advice?

General Board / Re: Question for law students at Top 50 schools

I'm at a t20 and competition is murderous. I know a girl who got 98/100 questions correct on her mult. choice torts exam and still only managed an A- on a B+ curve. I think it's a little bit luck, when it comes to mult. choice, and whole lot about who has the best study plan that they can stick to throughout the year.

The really shocking thing is that someone got to take a multiple choice exam!!!! ;D

I have this concern too, mostly because some of the people on the admitted students forum for my school logon as "guests"  all the time and post mean responses to almost everything anyone else says.  It really is starting to make me feel like these spineless anonymous people on the forum are goingg to be everywhere, but my bet is that they will be much nicer in person.  (or I hope so)
