Transferring / How Hard To Transfer to T14?
« on: August 03, 2005, 11:06:18 PM »
How hard would it be to transfer to Boalt? I would really like to go to Boalt, but they're GPA whores and my GPA is not impressive. My LSAT is more that strong enough to get in to a good school, so if I were to go to say UC-Hastings, how hard would it be to transfer to Boalt after 1L?

Generally to get into a T14 school (other than Harvard, Stanford, Yale which would be impossible) I will need to be top 10% at a tier 1 school and be on law review? Is that how it will work?

I've seen several people mention that Michigan takes a more holistic approach to applications, but I'm wondering if any other schools are known to base their decisions on the whole app rather than just numbers.

I have excellent LORs, strong soft factors and what I (and several profs who have read it) consider to be a very strong PS. However, my stats (3.1 and 161/170) aren't very impressive.

I know Georgetown, NW and Cornell look at your highest LSAT and I'll be applying there as well. However, Cornell doesn't seem to like GPAs below 3.3 at all (which sucks considering it would be my second choice). Any others in the top 14 that I should be playing close attention to?

Law School Rankings / Civil Rights Law?
« on: August 11, 2005, 09:17:14 PM »
USNWR doesn't give any indication of rankings for Civil Rights Law and it seems to be really difficult to find information on the study of this branch of law. Does anyone know if there are schools that are really well regarded in the field?

None of the big schools seem to allow you to focus on civil rights law, but do any ofthem have a solid reputation for civil rights profs or anything of the sort?

Reviews, Visits, and Rankings / University of Minnesota?
« on: August 11, 2005, 06:09:17 PM »
I'm rather interested in this school. It's a traditional top 20 program that only takes your highest LSAT (if the difference is greater than four points). That looks mighty good to me.

I don't now very much else about the school though (except what's in the US News Report), does anyone have any information? Has anyone visited? Any thoughts on the chances for postings with big firms from UMN? Shot at the big money jobs? Any idea as to the program's strengths and weaknesses?

In short, any thoughts at all on the University of Minnesota?

Where should I go next fall? / Top Schools for Academic Placement?
« on: August 09, 2005, 03:36:01 PM »
Does anyone know what the top schools are for academic placement? A list of the top ten? It doesn't seem to be in the USNews rankings, and I'll be damned if I know where to find it.

Thanks.

Does anyone know how easy this would be? Could my girlfriend get a work Visa in the states while I'm at law school? Would we need to be engaged? Married? Does she have to have a job first?

Basically she wants to go to Med School in the states, but take a year off and work first so her last year's grades go out with her application. She'll also use that time to study for the MCAT. But without a work Visa she can't work in the states. Does anyone know how this would work?

It seems to be the consensus that a T14 is not very likely with my GPA but I really want to graduate from a T14 school. So the question then becomes just how easy is it to transfer to a T14? Could I pick a school for next year with the intention of transferring after first year? What kind of a school would I need to be going to in order to transfer to a T14? Would it have to be tier 1? Would I need to be in the top 5%? Top 10%? Have to be on law review? Could I just go fishing for a full scholarship, go to some ridiculous school and then transfer?

Does anyone have any solid info about transferring (to Boalt in particular)?

Where should I go next fall? / Does ED Make it Easier to Get In?
« on: August 03, 2005, 04:52:16 PM »
Does anyone know if ED makes it easier to get in or will the criteria be the same? In specific I'm thinking of applying ED to Georgetown. Is there any benefit to doing so?

Where should I go next fall? / Advice on List on Schools to Apply To
« on: August 03, 2005, 01:46:16 AM »
My LSDAS GPA should be around 3.2 and my LSAT is (161+170)/2. I'm Canadian and will be applying there as well, and most of my 'safety' schools will be Canadian. However, in many respects I'd rather go down to the US, so I'm applying there as well. Not so focussed on safety schools, but rather where I want to go and where would be good for my fiance and me to live (she wants to go into medicine but will take a year off to work after graduation). I only want to apply to 6-8 schools, here's what I've drawn up:

Reach:
G'town
Northwestern
Cornell
(Basically the three top 14 that look at your highest LSAT. I'm very tempted to apply ED at G'town. When exactly would I have to have that in by?)

Realistic:
Hastings
American
George Washington

Safety:
San Diego

Basically I'm not really interested in American safety schools unless lifestyle will be sweet, and that's San Diego. DC is a big plus because of all the med schools nearby, but we also have relatives in California.

Any thoughts or suggestions on that list of schools?
