Reviews, Visits, and Rankings / Re: UVa Open House
« on: March 24, 2006, 10:20:12 PM »
My brief take on it:

UVA was high on my list, but after visiting today, I'm definitely not going.  It felt clique-y and high school-y...extremely so.  I also got the impression that practically everyone was from Virginia or surrounding areas, and I got a very strong Greek vibe from everyone I talked to...maybe that's wrong; it's just the impression I got.  So, if that's what you like and are comfortable with, you'd probably love it, but it isn't the atmosphere I'm looking for.  Also, Charlottesville is supposed to be amazingly beautiful...did I miss all of that?  I actually thought it was kind of dirty and run-down...maybe I just missed the beautiful parts, which is probably the case.

Anyway, it wasn't terrible...it just wasn't for me.  I can imagine lots of people really loving it, which they obviously do.

Ibroadrunr, what all worried/depressed you?

Is anyone who got the call/e-mail this week a 12/8 complete?

Congrats, chombi and others!  I'm in the 12/08 complete group and haven't heard anything back yet, either...how exciting to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel:)

Where should I go next fall? / Harvard Admissions Blog
« on: February 14, 2006, 06:27:20 PM »
Today's blog entry tried to explain what a "hold" means at Harvard...but it also said: "The rolling admissions cycle doesn't allow us to make final decisions on all applicants within the 2-month window (we promise applicants an update by the end of that time period)."

I remember the application information saying something about a "likely two-month turnaround," but I didn't know there was a two-month guarantee.  Even so, there seem to be several people on LSN who are still "pending" after more than two months (even discounting for abandoned accounts). Most people who were accepted heard back within a few days or weeks, and most rejection/deferrals came out before two months was up.

Any thoughts on what it means to be outside the two-month window and still not heard back?  Is a deferral/rejection just lost in the mail, or is it possible to get an admissions call after such a long time?

Wait List / Re: Held at Columbia (RD)
« on: January 28, 2006, 08:18:09 PM »
Does anyone have any idea what Columbia's trying to do here?  The index numbers on LSN provide almost no indication of who's getting accepted/held/waitlisted...I'm assuming cases like jwilcox's probably have a lot to do with yield protection, but as for those with numbers near their medians (like me), it seems harder to tell.

Sorry about the hold, jwilcox...you have tons of great options, though!

Acceptances / Re: Columbia Regular Decision
« on: January 28, 2006, 08:08:04 PM »
For those accepted--any thoughts as to what made your application stand out from people with similar numbers?  And, for that matter, any thoughts on what those of us "on hold" could send in as supplemental materials?

Oh, I didn't realize "iheartnewark" was an LSDer.  Sorry, didn't mean to talk behind your back.

No worries. I was flattered to be talked about.

I'm nervous seeing those other holds...my LSAT seems to be at the low end of this little "select group of applications."  I'm really not sure what it means to get a deferral letter off of a regular decision application...I thought those were only for early decision/action applications.

Thanks for the insights, Robespierre.  Here's hoping we both hear back much, much sooner than April 30.

They gave her a fee waiver, she has a 4.4 index plus interesting-looking soft factors, and she gets Held.  Pretty wild.

At least the Hold letter is pretty gracious.

Yeah, it was wild:)

I was feeling kindof optimistic about Columbia (which is definitely one of my top choices) based on index numbers, but those numbers don't seem to be very good indicators of who gets in, at least according to LSN.

And it's a little frustrating, because it seems like Robespierre and I are the only ones to get deferred RD so far (well, not in the whole world, but you get my meaning).

The hold letter seemed to encourage submitting additional materials...what have others done for this? I'm thinking of sending in an updated transcript with fall 2005 grades, a letter reaffirming my interest and...what else?  I have some papers I did for a Con Law class that I think are really well researched and written, but does the admissions committee really want to read a 20+ page paper they didn't ask for?

Anyway, good luck to everyone else:)

Denials / Re: Harvard Rejection
« on: January 19, 2006, 08:00:43 PM »
I applied in early October and still haven't heard...I didn't go complete until 12/8, though, and since a bunch of the 11/29 complete applicants have started to hear, I'm hoping I'll be in the next wave of yesses or nos.
