Financial Aid / Re: Roth IRA and financial aid
« on: August 21, 2005, 04:26:02 PM »
I've been working for five years and have a little money in a Roth IRA.  I know that the FAFSA does not consider money held in those when calculating need, but do individual schools consider it when offering supplementary aid?  I really don't want to withdraw it and possibly pay a penalty.  Anyone know the story?

They took my Roth money into account for my expected financial contribution.  I have also been putting money in it for about five years.

You are allowed to withdraw up to $10,000 from a Roth IRA for educational expenditures (in addition to the original money you put in) without penalty.  However, I would not suggest doing that, this is probably the only vehicle you have for tax free growth over a lifetime.  I know I am not touching mine (and will continue to add to it through the three years of law school).

Law school is so expensive that I don't think your Roth will have an effect in how much loan money you can get and the types of loans.  I still qualified for the maximum unsubsidized and subsidized stafford loans, and the amount of investments you have doesn't affect how much you get in private loans since they are private.

I sat next to him at the Chateu Marmont (where Jim Belushi died) once, and all I could think about was how ugly the girl he was with was...

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: Who is going to Loyola LA?
« on: August 04, 2005, 11:46:38 PM »
I am in D2 and haha contemplated doing the same thing

If you guys login to the intranet there is a link to your schedule.

https://webxo.lls.edu/regapp/SWS_WEBLOGIN_PKG.UI_Login

You have to login for the first time, but it's there.

So I have Sarah Bensinger for legal writing (I'm in Section 4)

Do you know how you figure out what your user name is?

Yeah.  Username is last name followed by first initial.  Password is the initials of your first and last name followed by the last six numbers of your SSN.  So if your name was Susan Jones and your SSN was 123-45-6789 your username would be joness, and your password would be sj456789

Also, since they make you chose a parking permit before we've even gotten our class schedules, how would we know if we're carpooling yet? I have a roommate and if it turns out we're in the same section then of course we'd carpool. Wonder how changing that would work and how big of a hassle it'd be?

I think you can sign up for parking up through August 5th.  We should have our schedules by then...  I think I am going to go ahead and pay for regular parking this semester, and maybe try and do the carpool next semester.  Even if I have my schedule, I don't know anyone else and don't know what my study hours and habits will be.

I received a letter stating that we're suppose to sign up for "Administrative Functions" sessions between July 11-Aug 3 but the website hasn't worked for me at all. Anyone else not able to log on? All I've been getting is an Internet Explorer error page for the last week.

This is the site: http://technology.lls.edu/adminfunc

Thanks!

I got the error as well.  When did you get the letter?  I read online that we should get our fall schedules at the end of June, but I haven't seen anything.  Was that included?  Schedules are posted online for each section, but I don't know what section I am in...  Communication has been kind of spotty for me, everything seems to come much later than they say...
