I have a call back interview in a few weeks. Any tips on what questions to expect, what is the firm "really" looking for, etc.

Studying and Exam Taking / Anyone have success just using commercial outlines?« on: October 31, 2005, 08:20:20 AM »
I've been outlining (using my casebook's table of contents as a reference) and found I was simply transposing my commerical outline (Gilbert's) to my computer. So I thought, "why reinvent the wheel?". My thought is just to use Gilbert's and add any class notes I have to that outline.
Has anyone had experience with this technique? 4

I now totally understand all the posts about hiding the ball. My profs are downright Houdinis! They jump around from chapter to chapter, section to section and NEVER discuss law. We just talk about cases - particularly the issues that sutdents don't understand - and never get to the rule of law. If it wasn't for supplements I would be screwed. No prof will answer a question; "my job is to ask the questions, you answer them". During my Torts class, a student asked to clarify the rule of law in a particular case - he reacted as if she shot his dog.
This cat and mouse technique leads me to a question - how do the rules of law from cases mesh with your outline? Thus far, many cases (in my briefs and canned briefs) have rules of law that are not consistent with those in commercial outlines. I've already started making my outlines by looking at the casebook's table of contents and then plugging in rules from commercial outlines. Any comments? 5

General Board / HELP! Part-timer needs advice on time management« on: August 25, 2005, 08:01:56 AM »
During orientation this week, the school announced that the PT program was being expanded from 3 nights/week to 4. I'm looking for advice from students who have been in my situation.
My concern? With the reduced time to study, how can I read all cases, brief them, condense notes, build outline?  Here is my schedule: M-F: Work full-time, 7:30am-5:30pm M-TH: Class 6:30pm-9:30pm Leaves me with only Friday evening & the weeknds free. By the way, I'm also married with 2 kids. HELP!! What to do!!! 7

I've read many posts that state the best way to brief is:
1) Review the subject in an outline (Gilbert's, Emanuel's). 2) Skim through the case using a canned brief. 3) Read the case. 4) Review canned brief again if necessary 5) Write your own brief. Perhaps I'm thinking too hard about this - but, if you read the canned brief, why would there be a need to write your own brief? Wouldn't you basically be regurgitating what you read in the canned brief? Am I missing something? PLEASE CLEAR UP FOR ME!!! 8

As a newbie starting school next month, I enjoy sitting back and reading the various opinions on "to brief or not to brief". It appears that the concensus is to brief in some form or fashion. But I've also read many posts about the best "method" of briefing: Delaney's, Law School Confidential's, LEEWS'.
Can you 2L's & 3L's sound off on your opinions? 9

General Board / Brief, Book Brief or Canned Briefs...that is the question!« on: June 10, 2005, 08:01:07 AM »
With so many theories floating around on how to tackle law school, I thought I would pick one that is controversial - briefing. There seems to be three primary schools of thought: write out briefs, book brief or use canned briefs.
I would like to hear from experienced students - what did you do? Did one work better than the other? Did you migrate from one to another? Does any of it matter for anything other than the Socratic Method? |
