Where should I go next fall? / Re: Seattle Living
« on: June 25, 2005, 09:56:11 AM »
Are you going to UW or SU?  because it's a big difference in commuter time.

I just bought a house in Mill Creek, which is about 15 miles north of UW, and it takes me an hour++ by car to get to UW for a 9 am class but 20 minutes for anything between 10 am to 2pm.  Heading home is even worse.

Personally, I would never live south of Freemont, but I've lived most everywhere.  email me if you need more indepth info.  mdbutler@u.washington.edu

from page 1 of this topic "(pul-leese no Gonzaga)."

Why no Gonzaga?  My wife wants me to apply there because her parents live in Spokane.  Is it a bad school, bad area?

It is the city not the school.  I grew up there, and I do not have many fond memories.

At the Univ of WA, they have let a law school mom attend class by listening through audio equipment and sitting outside the classroom (in a hallway or something?) with the baby.

If my memory serves me correctly, the law school made a big point of this, for it was on the website.  I believe they advertised her child as the youngest "student" to date.

Funny, I'm not having a baby, but my wife and I want another.  I have major concerns with an infant while attending law school.  However, my wife is 36, so we really do not have much more time.  By the way, it will be our fourth.  Still trying for the boy!

For fun: "After Jihad: America and the Struggle for Islamic Democracy" by Noah Feldman, "The Partly Cloudy Patriot" by Sarah Vowel, and "The Dirt : Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band" -- by Tommy Lee

For LSAT: Kaplan 180, The PowerScore LSAT Logic Games Bible by David M. Killoran

For classes: to long to list

For kids: Cinderella (I cannot believe they called her cinderslut; it was really fun explaining that to my girls)

I have a confession to make: I have never made more than $20,000 a year in my life. I think it might be closer to $18,000.

I remember being about 19 and calculating an upcoming raise of about $.50 an hour.  All I kept thinking,  ‘damn, if I could only make $10 an hour, then, I will have really made it.’   Ha, what a joke!

Without divulging too much information, many would think that my wife and I make an excellent living, but we really still live paycheck to paycheck.  Although we do have three children in private school and support (what I believe) half of the Philippines (i.e. my wife’s family), my becoming an attorney will have little effect on our lifestyle.

When we came to the conclusion that I should attend law school, we agreed that she would basically support the family while I work a maximum of 20 hours a week.  But, when I get the JD, she drops to 20 hours a week, and I hit 100.

I recently sat in on a 1L Criminal Law class and I was surprised at the number of students playing solitare on their laptops.  I asked the 3L who gave me the tour about it and she said "Well you know, these classes are pretty boring."  I laughed and thought to myself that some of these people are in for a rude awakening when they get out in the real world....I was also surprised at the number of them who could not speak in front of the class when called upon by the professor.

Well, I am not over 40, but I am just finishing up a BA.  I am amazed at how the majority of ‘traditional’ students put in as little effort as possible.   Granted, there are the exceptions, but for the most part, I look around and think ‘if they only knew.’

Honestly, I look forward to law school and the idea of ‘competition.’
