General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: used or new supplements
« on: May 11, 2009, 01:36:50 PM »
you'll be ok with the older ones, as long as they're not too old. if you get a used civ pro supplement, aim for one that has the updated 2007 FRCP (federal rules of civil procedure).  it'll just make things a little easier. :)

your best bet is to wait until you've started classes before you buy any supplements.  I bought Emanuel outlines for all of my classes before classes actually started, and it turned out they were all garbage.  I'm sure they were helpful for some people, but for me and my prof's, they weren't very good.  I ended up having to go out and buy a bunch of different hornbooks and supplements anyways.

Here are my suggestions... Wait and see what your prof recommends.  Try to get your hands on the different outlines and supplements so you can see which fits your learning style. MY school has all of them on reserve at the law library, i'm sure other schools do the same.  Personally, I hate E&E and the concise hornbook series, but love Gilberts and the 'Intro to' hornbook series.  its really based on your learning style.  good luck in your first year!

General Board / Not sure which SBA position to run for... Advice?
« on: September 02, 2008, 01:54:26 PM »
My school holds elections for the SBA positions (as I'm sure most do).  I'm planning on running for one of them, but i'm not sure which one to go with.  I can choose between the following.

1L President
1L Vice President
1L Secretary
1L Treasurer
1L Representative

I asked the current SBA officers for some info on the positions, but they didn't really have much to offer.  they said that it depends on what your class wants you to do.  Does anyone have experience with these positions?  What kinds of duties did you have?  The only one that I dont really want to do is Treasurer, just bc I'm not really a math person (hense the law school plan... lol).

Any advice would be appreciated!  Thanks!

« on: August 21, 2008, 11:31:32 AM »
i thought that i could access black's law dictionary from westlaw or lexis or something, but now i can't remember where.  does anyone know which site has the online version of black's?  i tried to poke around westlaw, but didn't come up with anything other than their "word of the day" thing.

thanks!

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: Orientation is on Monday...
« on: August 18, 2008, 10:09:48 AM »
my school was nice and told us how to dress for each orientation event.  :)  today is business attire, and the rest of the week is pretty much business casual, with the exception of one event on friday (casual).  i think the only reason today is business is because we're doing photos and they want us looking pretty.  lol

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: Vision Plan: worth it?
« on: August 07, 2008, 01:18:10 PM »
you really have to take into consideration how much the plan costs on a monthly basis + the cost of your exam/contacts after insurance payments versus how much you'd pay for your exam/contacts without any insurance help.  usually a vision plan is a really big help, since they tend to cover a full year's worth of contact lenses.

General Board / Re: My advice to the starting 1Ls (LONG)
« on: August 05, 2008, 08:43:26 PM »

•Start your job search from day one of 1L, look outside school, do not put it off and you will be far ahead of the curve.

do you have any suggestions on how to job search outside of school, other than networking?  are there any good legal job websites or anything similar that you would recommend?

thanks for taking the time to give us advice!!
