Financial Aid / Re: Loans based on LIBOR or Prime Rate?
« on: June 07, 2005, 08:49:49 AM »
Historically, LIBOR rate has been lower than the Prime.  Check out the following link:

http://accessgroup.org/students/LIBORforstudents.htm

that's true but irrelevant I think.  all the loans add some % to the prime or libor rate so even though the LIBOR is lower it will have more added on top of it.

It does seem that most schools recommend Access or Northstar/T.H.E.   This is probably because they are non profits and in fact THE redistributes their profits by way of interest rate deductions.  This fact made their rate the best deal for me and hence my choice.

I haven't thought this out too much but, it seems if you have a constant and a variable rate and rates are undoubtably the lowest they will be for decades to come, then you are better off going with the rate whose total includes less variation.  In other words if the effective rate at both place were say 7.0%; 3.4% LIBOR + 3.6%  vs. a 6.0 Prime rate + 1.0%.  If the rates were to go up by the same percentage (of themselves)  you would be better off with LIBOR because only half of your effective interest rate went up instead of about 85% of the effective rate with the prime loan.

Please someone let me know if that logic is incorrect.

Not all lenders add a percentage to the Prime. I just got Prime + 0% from Citibank's Law Loan program. Pretty good deal I think.

I went to an awful TTT, where hardly anyone had ever thought of going to top law schools.....

and got into all but one of the schools that I applied to: Columbia, NYU, Penn, etc...

Where should I go next fall? / Re: Where to live in Camden?

Camden is one of the most dangerous cities in the country. Has been for a VERY long time.

You are an auto-admit at Temple. If you would have applied early, you would have probably gotten into Penn (I'm assuming you want/need to be in Philly). You may want to consider applying next year early to Penn if for some reason Temple is done accepting people or you would rather go somewhere else.

Just my two cents.

I applied to Temple, and for various reasons (mostly family/personal) really would like to go there. I applied right before their deadline, though, unfortunately -- I should have gotten my application together quicker but didn't.

I got a 169 on my LSAT and have a 3.95 UGPA (from a small, rather unknown liberal arts college). But I'm worried about how late I applied. If I applied on Feb. 28, do I even stand a chance at still being admitted to Temple?

And how long does it generally take temple to make decisions (either acceptances or rejections)?

Where should I go next fall? / Re: Penn State Dickinson?
« on: March 05, 2005, 01:44:57 PM »
hmm. that's interesting because the dickinson acceptance packet has all this information in it about how it has the highest bar passage in PA and then lists the percentages.. and it does say it's above Penn. I am confused.

If someone posts this information (the statistics) that is in the acceptance packet, I will send an e-mail to Dickinson asking for explanation. I will do this without hesitation because I have no intention of going (I wouldn't even apply) to Dickinson, but I'm from SE PA and know friends that are thinking about going there, and I want to look out for them. If Dickinson is lying about their bar passage record, or deceiving potential students, they should be reported to the proper authorities.

It boasts of the highest bar passage rates in PA
(yes, above the philadelphia schools, including Penn)
so I would seriously consider it.

This is incorrect. For July 2004, Penn had a PA Bar Passage Rate of 92.54%, while Dickinson had a rate of 74.56%. Perhaps you got confused because Penn reports its NY Bar Passage rate to USNEWS (since by far most Penn grads take the NY Bar). Temple, Villanova, and Pitt also all had higher PA bar passage rates for this last exam.

Acceptances / Re: Accepted at PENN!
« on: December 10, 2004, 02:39:58 PM »
Thanks for the kind words. I'm definitely excited. I had seen a few posts on Wednesday night from two people who said they got calls from Derek Meeker, and I guess that myself and a few others got called last night. All of the calls, from what I've heard, have been after 5:00. I suppose that after business hours he decides to call a few people before he goes home. It seems like it will take a long time to call all the acceptees this way, however. I'm curious to know how many EA applications they received (there were reports of an increase in 77%).

Also got into Temple today.

I love that footnote on the heels of your 3.9/170s Penn acceptance. It sounds like you have a pretty tough choice. I recommend Temple. As a matter of fact, as someone applying to Penn, I recommend that EVERYONE accepted at Penn choose Temple. :)

If Temple threw me suitcases full of money to go there, and Penn and other schools that I applied to would not, I would consider going to Temple. But I suppose that decision will have to wait quite a while...

The temple letter came in a small envelope and was only one page. It said more information would come later. I was complete around the end of October.

I too had the pleasure of speaking with Derek Meeker on the phone tonight. He said that the letter is coming in a week and a big portfolio of information will come in January.

I'm officially out to the bars now.

Numbers: 3.9ish/170ish.

Got the call tonight from Derek Meeker. He said that the letter will be sent in a week or two, and then a big packet of info around January. A very nice phone call indeed.

I'm going to the bar right now instead of studying for finals.

Also got into Temple today.

3.9ish/170ish (approximate numbers).
