Wait List / Re: anyone hear from UVA yet?!
« on: August 01, 2007, 11:42:18 AM »
ok so i just got an email that says they have updated my Admit status on the website.  I checked the website and it says they have reached a final decision on my application and that it will be mailed to me in 10 days.  it says that to protect my confidentiality they will not release information over the phone.  Im pretty sure I am now going to receive a letter telling me they have released me from the waitlist, right?  I mean, don't they call you if they are letting you in because they need to know immediately?  Is there any way this could be good news??  Any help would be great, thanks.

to all those on the UVA waitlist (especially those who received an acceptance)--

if applying right out of college, did you send in your spring 2007 grades?  i didnt send mine in (bc my grades dropped) and im wondering if that is going to destroy my chances of getting accepted off the WL.  im just hoping i hear from someone who opted not to send them in as well... please let me know!!

Wait List / Re: The Most Impressive Way to get off WL
« on: May 10, 2007, 05:07:26 PM »
This is what a man did to get off the waitlist (a few years ago)... UVA Law put him on the waitlist, and when he was sitting at a bus stop near the law school in Charlottesville he heard a guy talking about how he had planned on going to UVA Law the next year but was going to have to drop out becuase his father was sick.  The waitlisted guy asked for the man's name, went straight to the admissions office and said "I just talked to Joe Schmo and he isn't coming here anymore, can I have his spot".  ANd they let him in.  True story.

Wait List / Grades dropped, submit new transcript or no?
« on: May 08, 2007, 05:25:15 PM »
After I sent in my applications i was waitlisted at my dream school.  My grades dropped this semester (I think I have a 3.1 this semester and I usually have a 3.5).  My WL school claims that there is "probably not" anything an applicant can do to increase his or her chances of getting off the WL, but you are "certainly welcome to submit your spring 2007 grades".

My question is this: do most people send in their spring grades that are on a waitlist?  Will it look bad if i don't send mine (like I'm hiding something)?  Or will it just be no big deal, becuase only some people submit them?  It's not like I got a bunch of C's or anything, but I just don't know if not sending it would hurt my chances.

Any advice would be so helpful!

Where should I go next fall? / Re: UT vs. W&L - help!
« on: April 16, 2007, 09:26:39 PM »
Yeah, I'm a little baffled as to how this is a tough call, especially since money is not an issue.  Go to UT.  A small, cozy envirnonment is a reason to choose somewhere for undergrad, not law school.  I mean, UT is a big school, but it's not like people are bursting out of the lecture halls or anything.

I went to a small, tight-knit high school where I loved the sense of community, and when I came to college (large public, about 12,000) I felt pretty lost in the crowd for a while.  I also didn't like the huge classes.  That is why the smaller atmosphere of W&L really is an important factor to me.  But I'm still leaning toward UT either way.

As far as the whole W&L debate goes, I have visited a couple of times and I have checked on their number of journals, clinics, etc.  I definitely appreciate everyone's input!

I have been accepted at both UT-Austin and W&L.  I have $15/k a year at W&L and no money at UT, but thankfully I don't really have to worry about the money issue.  Any advice at all would be helpful!  I'm not sure I want to stay in the state of Texas to practice and I hear that might be something to think about when considering UT.  Thanks so much!

Well if you're not sure you're interested in a law practice in Texas, might I inquire if you do have any firm specific geographic locations in mind for a future practice?

I believe W&L does quite well in the South-East/Mid-Atlantic (from DC downwards).

Do you have a preference for class size and/or location?

It will probably be hard to beat W&L if you're looking for a small, tight-knit class with a fairly low student-faculty ratio.  However Lexington is definitely a "small town" compared to the City of Austin.  I do believe there are a number of Texans either currently attending or considering to attend W&L.

Have you visited W&L?

EDIT: Ahh... I see that Waitlist2010 beat me to it.   :)

Thanks for your response.  I'm not totally positive about geographic locations. although I would have to guess I will probably end up in the southeast (Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville).  I would also be open to practicing in NYC/DC for a few years right out of law school.

A low student/faculty ratio and tight-knit community are both very important to me, but I'm not sure HOW important.  I would love to go to a smaller school where I get more personal attention, but I think I would be happy at UT and I'm not sure I want to pass it up because of its stronger national reputation.

Also, I think Austin seems a hell of a lot cooler than Lexington, but I'm not sure how much attention I should pay to location.

Basically, I'm weighing the smaller atmosphere of W&L (which I like) to the reputation of UT (which I believe is better).
