Distance Education Law Schools / Re: Law School to Offer Hybrid Online JD
« on: December 23, 2013, 05:20:13 AM »
I don't see how. Say you have a lecture hall with room for 100 students, conservatively. Add a computer or even two, a webcam to cover the goings-on of the lecturer, and a set of speakers powerful enough to be heard throughout the room, and you now have a lecture hall with room for enough students as the web connection can handle. Literally thousands, all paying essentially the same price students are paying now. Because if they're in law school at all, numbers and cost-benefit are not their strong suit anyway. If they were, they wouldn't be cutting their own throats paying what they do to go to law school and have such poor career prospects.

I seriously don't even get the ABA's hangup over this. A law student can just as easily sit in a dorm room, apartment, or Starbucks, for that matter, and check Facebook while pretending to pay attention to a law school lecture via webcam, responding via microphone if called on, and have the same pathetic experience as law school students are having now, likely in a more comfortable chair. The only real difference is networking, and that usually takes place outside class anyway.

Studying and Exam Taking / Re: First Exam as a 1L! Freaking Out!!!

The Inverse Performance Rule comes in two flavors:

1. The worse you feel you did on a law school examination, the better you did.
2. The less you care about the grade you get on a law school examination, the better the grade you will receive.

Chill out. Finish your exams. Then go get drunk somewhere until you get your grades back. You have another 2.5 years of this, so there's no sense in melting down now.

LSAC and LSDAS / Re: Repeated information on certain applications on LSAC
« on: December 01, 2013, 04:56:02 AM »
Just copy and paste it. It's not like they're going to spend a lot of time looking at your file, so the more often it appears in your application packet, the more chances they have of actually reading it at some point. Not that anything beyond your GPA and LSAT score are going to make much of a difference, though I'm sure they're always on the lookout for something meaningful, like "developed a treatment for small-cell carcinoma."

Don't worry about it. Your major doesn't matter at all. The two most important factors are your GPA and your score on the LSAT. If you're getting good grades, keep doing what you're doing.

All of the big-name posters have graduated law school and left this place behind.

urp?

Sorry. Didn't mean to minimize your role here. From time to time I'm still tempted sometimes to lift BW's ban, just to spice things up for a bit. Then I remember just how bad a situation it would be.

Law School Applications / Re: Law school and engineering undergrad?

There are more options available to you. Look into the USPTO, for example, to see if that might be something you can do after graduating with your engineering degree. Could save you a ton.

The LSD owners are out of reach?  I see a few advertisements which could mean someone is around.  Are there any moderators on-board?

What is the LSD history?  Did this site once have hundreds of posters and then it dwindled down or was it always visited by just a small handful of posters?  Was there once a fair amount of advertisers?

I was over at TLS today.  Someone was happy about landing an offer and was immediately thrashed by the board admins for bragging….too unreal.  To me it seems like the TLS the owner tossed the keys to a nice site to some unemployable admins who sit at their keyboards all day (many with +30,000 posts…which greatly accounts for the high post activity).  However, I will say that it is not unusual that +300 posters are on-line.

You all probably know all of that.  Just saying, if there is a way to update LSD, there is a need.

Ads--if you're referring to banner ads and the like--are automated. I don't think Andrew has personally touched the site in years. I know Jeffort was trying to work with him a couple years back, just to keep things moving, but no dice. As far as moderators, I'm the last one appointed, and the only one who still shows up with any regularity. My main job is cleaning up after spammers and shills, trying to maintain some semblance of respectability for decent posters.

There have been a few periods when there were several hundred active posters on at once, but those days are long gone. All of the big-name posters have graduated law school and left this place behind. I can't really say I blame them; I'm coming up on my seventh year, very shortly, and wonder every time Julie posts how she has stuck with it so long.

Is there a need for an update? Certainly. Will it happen? No. The willingness on the part of the one person who can do it simply isn't there.

lsd have golden era once.

A couple of them.

Unfortunately, the one who can make the changes is out of reach, and has been for a very long time. In that respect, we're in the same boat as TLS.

It sounds like you may be having issues with a pop-up blocker. Hold the Ctrl key while clicking to override it.
