Hey! I'm going to be a 1L at Maryland too. I'd say it all depends on your relationship with your family, how long the commute is and whether or not you will be able to do work at home (I never can, though that could be because I'm always home for holidays).
As for places to leave near campus, I'm living in Ridgely's Delight next year, which is about a 7 minute walk to the law school. It's mostly rowhouses and located south of the school on the east (or "right" lol) side of MLK (but near it). It's a relatively safe neighborhood for what it is, and the rent is very reasonable. The only other options in my opinion (if you want to live in walking distance) are in apartment complexes downtown. I heard the Marlboro classic, redwood, and camden court are nice. They're more pricey though. What turned me off to the apts the most was that parking is anywhere between $80 and $140 a month!
