Dude, your current GPA would not put you in the top quartile of the class at Minn which is somewhere above a 3.5 for both the 2l and 3L classes.  You may have a chance to transfer to a georgetown/northwestern level school, but who knows.   There are probably 60 or so people at Minn with better GPA's than you.  If you get law review at Minn. you might have a chance at a federal clerkship in Minnesota, otherwise it is highly unlikely that you would achieve that goal barring extensive networking connections with the federal judiciary.  The federal judiciary could have its pick of clerks from the law reviews of the t-14, something that is largely out of the question for you.  Its hard enough to get a Big law job outside of the top quartile at Minn, infinitely more difficult to get a federal clerkship.  If you successfully transfer to a lower t-14, AND write onto law review (if that is permitted), AND rock a very high GPA your 2L year, AND get lucky, you will get a chance at some federal clerkship interviews.

I know someone who attempted this last year at Minn and got rejected  . . .  I don't think they will give you in state unless you get married to an in-state resident, or have some other compelling reason.

Current Law Students / How bad will the hiring market be in 2008-2009?

I am no economist, but there has been a lot of data showing that an fairly severe recession is ahead.

With the jobs/law student ratio already very tight, will there be a lot of no-offers or soft offers given this summer?

My guess is yes.  Someone convince me otherwise.

What could it hurt to apply to a spread of schools?

I think if yo get the same grades next semester, Northwestern would be highly attainable.  I know someone with similar grades from chicago-kent who transferred successfully to NW.

Minnesota, 3.5, secondary journal--30 interviews--3 callbacks so far (strangely none from Minnesota)

In the Biglaw world, Georgetown with law review will take you just as far as Columbia without law review (with perhaps the exception of a few snotty NY firms).  However, Gtown with law review may actually open more doors in terms of Court of Appeals Clerkships

1L studying certainly should not take up all of your time.  If it does you are doing something wrong.  However, the free time you do have needs to be spent relaxing, hanging with friends and family, excercising, etc.  I know some people that worked, but the people who didn't were generally much happier.
