2L job search / Re: Should I apply to all the OCI firms?« on: August 11, 2007, 11:26:39 AM »I'm sick of trying to figure out which OCI firms I want to interview with and the resume drop is fast approaching. Is there any harm in applying to all the firms and then turning down OCI screening interviews after researching some more. Do firms get offended by this, or is it expected? Should I care if they do get offended? You might want to check with career services. It might just be my crazy school, but we can not turn down screening interviews if offered (unless under crazy circumstances and already having a job is not one of them.) I think CS is worried about them getting offended. 3

This is generally not true. Most likely your classes will start at 5:30 (we had one night where we started at 7) which means that the classes line up perfectly. I wont promise anything, but as I said earlier, if you can do it, then I would suggest it. The other option of having LS at 8:30 at night just stinks - esp because you are not promised that they will line up either (your section could get out of contracts at 7:20 and then have LS at 8:30.) 4

During orientation you will hear a presentation from Student Health and then have opportunities to talk to them in kindof an open house format. My understanding was that its kindof "emergency coverage." However, that said - the one time that I went to the Student clinic thing, it was awesome. Visits are free and they have highly reduced medicines (it was almost cheaper then what I pay with my non-student insurance.) They can handle your every day things like colds and stuff. I think they are also the first person that you have to go to if you have the student insurance to get a referral elsewhere. Generally, unless you are without coverage now, I would wait until school starts so you can ask a lot of these questions. Oh and for housing, I live in the Clairemont area basically just up Morena and I love it. Clairemont can be hit or miss, but you can find some nice places a little cheaper (ex. I pay 1250 for a 2-bedroom.) 5

Everyone's LS class will be different in terms of books. My professor assigned homework out of the basic grammar one, so you probably needed it. If I could do it again, I would wait until you actually needed the books to buy them (except for the bluebook of course.) I bought a supplement for contracts that I never opened. Oh, and I probably spent about 250 on books as an evening student (2 classes and LS.) But its really only first semester that you cant buy your books in advance. Second semester you will probably know who your teachers are before your finals. As far as workload goes, my life was a little different in the evening program. But let me say, save yourself some headaches and dont ask too many people this question. Generally do what feels right for you and try to block everything else out - law school is a serious mind game. But anyways, I worked in the mornings, and then studied from 2-5:30 and then class from 5:30 till the end. Then I usually studied about 3-4 hours a day on the weekends. This is actually studying and not playing on the internet time. This kept me current through the year and then I studied more around finals time. (PS - Evening students generally have a week between finals as opposed to one day, so they count on you needing to work a little.) 6

Hey everyone, I was an evening student this year (you can tell from my previous posts) so I should be able to answer most of your questions. Contrary to the theme on this board, I LOVED the 4 o'clock class. If you can swing it with work. it is so worth it. LS is really boring, so having to sit through that at 7:30 or 9:00 at night after property or something is horrible! Additionally, you will have class at 5:30 almost every day, so the odds of a class not being scheduled right after (aka allowing you to get out early) is really really slim. I would highly recommend it.
Oh, and as far as schedules go, you can pretty much plan on classes at 5:30-8ish every night. Some nights earlier and some nights later, but generally its not too bad. My first semester I had class M/T/TH from 5:30-7:50 and until 9ish on W. 8

You have to go on the 15th to register, buy books, get id and parking pass. Everyone is assigned a time based on their last name, but evening students can come at 5 or 5:30. It took about an hour. Then the 16th and 17th are full days - 8:30 to 4:30 type days and all the events are mandatory. I remember I took off work on Th/F, but not Wed. Hope this helps! 9

There is some hope though - USD does sell used books (which is a reason to go early on the Wednesday of Orientation), you could buy them online and in the book store and then return the book store ones (a lot of work, but I know some people think its worth it), and then finally, SBA will be holding a used book sale the days of orientation (they have never done this before, but hopefully it will be good.) Im amazed at the number of upperclassmen who still have their 1L books (I have all of mine) so ask around and you might get some used books from them (thats how I got my contracts stuff.) 10

So, this is kindof random, but if anyone did decide to take the summer class at Cal Western, I have my outlines if you want them. I did a lot of work for that class and they were pretty good. It totally defeats the purpose of the class, but since its graded for CW students, I thought I would throw it out there.

...ok, so i think i spent...about $400 on books first semester...a little more than that, but i distinctly remember it being under $500...that's just the required stuff tho...if you want to get outlines and stuff, it'll cost u quite a bit more...one thing i will say, you could probably get away with not getting your books for skills...i got them...and i think i opened those 3 books (which cost a total of about $100) a total of 5 times...and that was before i figured out i could probably have gotten away with not opening any of them...but yea, someone in our section figured out the required books for second semester way ahead of time and i got those online...i think second semester cost me under $250...
