There are also areas closer in that are "up and coming" where housing is more affordable--Roslindale or Jamaica Plain, for example--it's easy to have a car there but it's also close to the T.  I'm living in Malden right now, which I think is also nice and is more affordable. Suffolk is so close to the Downtown Crossing T stop that living on the Orange, Red, or Green Lines would be okay.
