Law School Admissions / Re: Harvard 1Ls Taking Questions
« on: May 08, 2007, 10:19:30 AM »
I only chime in on this board every once in a while, but I have to comment on North.  I live here now, and I do not regret my decision.  It is two blocks, and it feels like two blocks all semester long (no more, no less).  I'm from Texas, so it was rather hard for me to adjust to the winter........but I still do not regret my decision!!!!

They do not provide housing for the internship.

Does Harvard reimburse for travel or accomodations for ASW?

Yes; I was reimbursed last year.  There weren't may forms......actually, it was only the FAFSA and an additional form requesting reimbursement.

Black Law Students / Re: Nannies Don't Want to Work for Black Families
« on: December 31, 2006, 10:15:38 AM »
As inflammatory as some of the statements seemed, it turns out that the racial slurs in the piece were sanitized or paraphrased per the Times's policies.  Mr. Boone also shared that Caribbean nannies were especially reluctant to work for black families because they had negative perceptions of African-Americans. Some of it too seemed to do with some idea of “prestige” among the nannies.  Although they themselves often live in less than savory neighborhoods, they will refuse to work in certain neighborhoods because it’s “below” them.  For example they may refuse to work in Harlem or the Southside even though there are very upscale portions in both areas.

Most of the blded doesn't surprise me.  Black Caribbeans often beleive the stereotypes that filter out about blk Americans (see Mary Waters).

 ::)

I don't even know how else to respond to that bullskit.

Oh I know that. Doesn't surprise me either; Black Africans often feel the same way. It makes me angry more than anything. The idea of people who come to the US and benefit because of the ish that Black Americans persevered through, but then look down on Black Americans - it's astounding and maddening to me. It's bad enough when White folks hate on us, but this? >:( and ::)

Is it even more maddening that other African Americans do too??  It's not a foreign black v. black american thing......it's a no one wants to work for black people thing.

Okay.  I was trying to be calm and collected about the whole thing, but I was accepted to Harvard early last week.  Now that I've had time to get used to the idea, I'm dying to talk about it.  Those of you who are there, or who were admitted and attended admit weekends. Tell me what you know about Harvard.

Here are some of the things I'd like to know about:

1.)Opportunities for Academia.
GREAT!!!  There are so many professors to get in contact with and there are many BLSA students that will be clerking.

2.)Chances for a 1L summer job at a Boston firm.
Great!!  Many people like to leave Boston

3.)Whether or not you can put me in touch with other non-trad students, preferably women with families.
I think so......meaning, I know they are married......don't know if they have kids.

4.)Public schools in Boston or Cambridge (for my kids who will be heading to kindergarten).
not sure

5.)Financial aid and how it might work for a person with a family (I read the financial aid info on the website, but still have tons of questions).
don't know

6.)Anything positive or negative I should consider when I make my choice about which school to attend.
consider what you want out of law school.

7.) What's in the acceptance package/binder?
Harvard Law School and maybe a t-shirt

I have way more questions, but this is getting long. Take a study break and indulge me.

Hey Section 1 Folks,

so I was feeling happy that we hadn't received any assignments yet..........well, we just haven't been notified yet.  If you go the Minow's, Frug's, and Donahue's sites, they all have reading to be done before the first day of classes.  Minow's texts will be ready in some distribution center on campus tomorrow.  To look them up, go to the website and find where they have the listing of all the classes, there should be somewhere for you to go to course websites......log in and look for the classes.  The reading doesn't seem to bad, but who knows.

Yes.......I took a maymester.  It was 10 days and my school deadline was June 2nd.  ......Now, I'm done!

Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for Dark Skin compared to Light Skin.
