2L job search / Re: Sacramento firms
« on: November 12, 2008, 01:14:59 PM »
Anyone know anything about Sacramento firms? Specifically, Downey Brand, DLA Piper, Bullivant?  Is the lower base salary worth the better quality of life?

I interviewed with 4 SAC firms including DB & Bullivant.  DB made huge cuts to their summer program and I got the sense that they are being hit pretty hard by the bad economy.  Very low billables, but that is about all they have going for them.  Biggest in SAC but still a small shop compared to other CA firms.  I liked Bullivant a lot, but their SAC office is mainly corporate so you have to wonder if the small office will survive much less do well in this economy.  Way cheaper to live in SAC, so you will likely have more $ left over even with lower pay.

2L job search / Re: canceling a callback
« on: October 18, 2008, 04:25:02 PM »
I would probably go because of the plane ticket.  I canceled several local callbacks, but I would feel bad for the money they wasted if I didn't go and there was a chance that I would work there.  With that said, if you are 100% positive you don't want to work there, by going on the callback you are just wasting more of their money by taking up the attorney's time.  If you cancel it will be very awkward to do without saying that you have another offer that you intend to accept.  They will definitely ask where.

If you have other comparable options, choose them.  Otherwise go there.

That is funny I am in a very similar situation and I am accepting option 1.  Most people I have talked to about it have also advised me that way.

I don't think age has anything to do with it.  It certainly has not been my experience.  It is grades + school + individual personality.  That simple.

I don't think you will be limiting yourself if the firm itself is strong and has a national presence.  You might enjoy living in the secondary market city more too.

2L job search / Re: Dinner Interviews - Order a drink?
« on: October 15, 2008, 08:24:49 PM »
Order a drink only if they do and you want one.

NO, ignore the bill.  Of course be polite and thank them, but don't offer to pay.

Hopefully there will be no awkward silences, and you should do your best to avoid them by being engaging and being interesting in conversation.  Ask a question if there is a period of silence, but don't sound artificial.

Call them - it can't hurt and it takes 2 minutes.

Sounds like a callback, someone should probably contact you soon.  Otherwise the guy was not being careful about the impression he was giving (which I have heard of).

I think that's pretty common for firms that don't participate in your school's OCI.  I've had several firms offer me interviews like that.  Only two firms have asked me to visit them for screening interviews rather than going ahead with scheduling "callback" interviews.

I agree.  My school has some firms that just do "resume collection."  From that I received 3 callbacks without a screening, while some other firms had me come to their office for the screening first.  I was just wondering how common this was and I am glad to see other people are having the same experience.
