Studying and Exam Taking / Re: NY BAR EXAM (bar/bri) Question:
« on: June 06, 2008, 09:06:29 AM »
I am outlining, and I too despise it.  I am convinced that many people will not and that it's unnecessary, but I do as I am instructed because I am lame.  I send my 1st essay off today, it's nice to hear such highly credentialed attention will be given to my practice exam.  Money well spent.

2L job search / Re: Odds of getting a firm job?
« on: June 05, 2008, 09:18:19 PM »
Hey,

Please let me know if I should be panicking.

After the fall semester, I was probably around the top third, but this semester I made a bad grade in crim (I ran out of time), and I am now probably right at the median. I have NO interest in practicing crim, so it sucks that this grade was the kicker that brought down my GPA from a 3.420 to a 3.280 :( I did not get a C, (I got a B-) but it is my worst grade. I am not sure what the median is at my school (it is a top 20 program), since we don't rank. The top 20% cut if usually around 3.5.

I really hate that I missed that 3.3 cutoff. Should I still apply to firms that have a 3.3 cutoff? Or what about firms that ask for top half? I have no clue how to do the math to calculate the median at the school, although I think it is a 3.2-something.

I won't know if I made a journal until July. Ideally, I would like to practice in Austin, Dallas, or Houston.

What do you older and wiser law students think?

BTW: I am employed as a summer associate for 8 weeks at a pretty large firm.

Don't circumvent the language filter.

If you pay shhit you don't owe, then you suck cock.  If your commonsense has been overridden by Jack da Banker's fear mongering  - then you deserve to pay it.  In fact, pay my shhit too.

I'd fukin hang up on Jack and his faggot bank if he said this shhit to me - "An UNPAID collection on your credit is bad.  It's not just that it screws the score up, but the majority of lenders will require you to pay it off before they will lend to you.  You can argue with them and say that it's just an isolated incident for a small dollar amount, and then they'll laugh behind your back."

And, I'd have three more lenders waiting in the wings.  Bankers are whores, finicky whores, but whores nonetheless.  They got the itch to get your loans and tie up your assets.  Keep your averaged credit score above 720 and you'll be fine - even under the new fed. lending standards.

 :D :D
Yeah, it's my mission in life to go around fear mongering for gold's gym. I've just been waiting on Lawschooldiscussion all this time for this opportunity!!!
Collection agencies specialize in collections.  I know that's a hard concept for bossofyou to understand.  Collections companies don't usually file against your credit if they don't have legal standing.   Maybe it's some stupid loophole, but I'm sure there is something in the contract that makes them think you owe them money.
It's totally unfair, but it will affect your score.  It will also make it extremely difficult to keep your score over 720.
Go do some research and listen to people you trust.  I don't care if you don't listen to me, but you'd be stupid to listen to bossofyou.   Telling collections agencies to "F off", and then just pretending like it will go away is a bad idea.

I have 3 unpaid collections and an average credit score of just over 800.  720 aint shhit.  Jack has banker knowledge, but has the commonsense and life experience of a 9yr old.

I don't work at a bank.

I live in reality.  Reality is, that a collection agency has been seeking $31 from me since 1997 for a Sprint phone charge.  As recently as this year I have received a phone call seeking collection.  And, I tell them what you ought to tell them - fuk off!  I have acquired a few cars, a house, a condo, and just got approved for financing on a $350k duplex rental property - all after having the Sprint collection problem.  Point is, an isolated incident is nothing to worry about.

You can contest bad debt (sample letter - http://www.nedap.org/resources/documents/DebtCollectionDispute.pdf).  Then burden shifts to collector to reestablish that the debt is owed.

If you want the "fuk off!" message to stick, write a letter.  But, I never bothered and it never hurt me.  As for recourse...wtf?  You're going to sue the Gym...explain that suit on your C&F application and interview...?

Finally, if you buy real property, the title company will try to collect for the bad debt at the closing.  They will say some shhit like "you need to clear this up."  Tell them to fuk off! too - they are bluffing, let them know you will find another title company to close the deal.

All I needed to see was the vast number of Obama shirts in class.
...

I'm so glad to see your vitriol extends to politics in addition to religion.  The predominance of liberal or "left" leaning individuals in academia has been the topic of some studies and papers.  Note that your post has little to actually do with politics in academia and instead seems to focus more on your personal biases against the media and non-conservatives.

Here are some links to the article I mentioned before, for all of those who might be interested in reading it.

(Note: in the interests of full disclosure, I have not read the actual study, although I intend to now that I found the link.)

The thread invites opinions.  Even stupid ones, where people post articles that they have not read.  LS politics requires an experiential understanding - not an empirical study of why "conservatives" are not in academia.

(note: I am not a conservative.  I am an "issues man," and if a label is needed, call me a libertarian.)
