Job Search / How to follow up?
« on: November 14, 2007, 08:16:39 PM »
So I got my offer and accepted way back in early October for a pretty large firm in NJ. On about the 14th of Oct., they said to expect a letter in about two weeks with all the specs and what not, but it has been over a month and I have not heard anything. I was thinking of sending an email to the recruitment director, however, I bothered her so much during the acceptance phase I could definitely get the hint that she may be getting annoyed...

so what is the best way to follow up with the firm and ask what the deal is. I really don't want to sound pushy, so any etiquette tips would be appreciated. Should I just wait it out? send an email? what should I say?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Current Law Students / B.A. (corporations) and Tax Supplements!
« on: November 02, 2007, 10:41:23 PM »
Hey Guys,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good study good for Business Associations (aka Corporations). With all the job searching, and journal work, I kinda breezed through the class and feel like I really don't know anything haha. If anyone could recommend some good supplements or good strategies to attack the class I would be appreciative.

Also, while I am here, does anyone have any recommendations for a Federal Income Taxation supplement?

Thanks in advance everyone!

- Mike

Current Law Students / Quick Procedural Question re: Ranking
« on: June 18, 2007, 10:45:47 AM »
This is probably a "use your best judgment" call, but I was curious as to what everyone else was placing on their resume...

For top 25% do you guys put "Top 1/4" or "Top 25%" on your resume? Do you include the actual numbers i.e. xx/xxx.

Id appreciate any helpful feedback. Thanks.

I just got my final 1L GPA, which was a 3.28 from a T2 school. I had a 3.5 the first semester, so i took a little hit. Dont get me wrong, I am still gracious of the GPA, but I am wondering... are most of my options for a good summer associate position finished?

I am very close friends with a well known professor at my law school, who would definitely make a phone call on my behalf (I am also his research assistant). I am also interning for a Federal District Judge this summer. Hopefully I may make a journal, but at this moment I wouldnt know. With these previous 2 additions however, do I have a shot at a moderate to large firm in the NJ area still or is my 3.28 gonna knock me out of the runnings? I know as far as OCI is concerned, most firms cut off at 3.5, but as far as outside connections and sending resumes, what are my realistic chances? Any 2Ls or 3Ls with experience could surely help, although any advice would be more than helpful.

So i need to take a 3 credit summer course and there are only 4 classes available... here are my choices...

Copyright Law; Employment Law; Remedies; and Conflict of Laws...

None of these really jump out at me or for that matter really interest me, however I must take one. Any suggestions or recomendations on which class might help me the best in my future legal career? Anything that would be helpful to the bar or look favorable on my transcripts?

Keep in mind I am still not sure as to what type of law I want to do, because I know that information would help make my decision a little clearer...

So yea, any input would be much appreciated... thanks guys!

Current Law Students / Re-thinking summer plans... help...

So I just got my class rank and I made it to top 15% (reall close to top 10) and i have a 3.5 gpa at shu law...

I was all set on taking a judicial internship this summer with a federal district judge... but now I am wondering if I should try for a firm...

with these stats do you think its wise to try to land a summer job with a firm or go the route of a judicial internship. The reason I was going to do the internship was so it looks better at fall OCI so I could get a great 2L summer position... but should I try for it now as well?

What do you think my best bet would be? would the federal internship be the best way to a great 2L associateship or should I try for something now and pass on the internship?

Any advice would be must appreciated guys!

Current Law Students / Summer Plans? What is best...?
« on: January 22, 2007, 05:58:41 AM »
I am starting to plan for my summer after 1L... was wondering if I could get some insight on what looks best for the good ol' resume...

I am debating between

A) A Judicial Externship with a Federal District Judge

B) Research Assistant position with professor at the Law School

C) Small to mid-size firm

I know my 2L summer I will attempt a big firm associatship, but I know the first summer is all about attaining experience. So what is my best route here. I have been told a federal externship is pretty impressive compared to a normal state superior court judge, but I still do not know which route is best to take...

Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks guys!

This soon-to-be 1L could use some help from his peers and elders if possible... I will be moving into my new apartment starting June 1st with two other roomates. I would like to draw up a contract basically stating each person will have to pay his share of the rent ($1,550.00/3). One of the guys isnt so reliable, so I could really use an "air-tight" contract in case he decides a few months down the road he wants to skip out on the rent and bills. If someone could draft me up a thorough and legit contract for this... i would be so greatly appreciative. Seeing as how I have yet to start law school and have that wonderful contracts class, this could really help. Thanks again, and to clarify, each person would be responsible for 517.00 in rent plus 1/3 of the bills (gas, electric, cable, internet, phone). Thanks you so much to anyone who can help!

if more info is needed PM or post
