General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / UCLA - Where to live?
« on: June 19, 2005, 08:54:16 PM »
I don't know much about LA other than the tourist attractions, so I am looking for some locals to help me find a good area to live in while I go to UCLA.  I am looking for one bedroom apartments that are affordable, not unreasonably far from campus, and relatively safe.  I will be living with my girlfriend, so I won't be paying alone, but we are still looking for rent that doesn't exceed $1200 a month (preferably less than $1000).

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Where should I go next fall? / GW or UCLA
« on: June 14, 2005, 07:36:38 PM »
I had already been accepted to GW, but today I got a phone call saying that there was a good chance that I would be accepted to UCLA off of the wait list later this week.  Putting aside all issues of money (tuition, living expenses, scholarships, etc.), which school should I choose?

I have no idea where I want to live after law school as long as it is in or very near a large city.  I also am not quite sure what type of law I want to practice, but I am fairly certain that I don't want to work in a big law firm.  I have actually been leaning toward becoming a PD.

Help please!  If you need any other information, just ask.

Wait List / Georgetown Preferred Waitlist
« on: April 22, 2005, 04:21:39 PM »
I got this email this afternoon, and I was wondering if it was just boilerplate.  Did everybody else get a letter like this?

Dear XXXXXX,

As you are aware from earlier communications with Georgetown University Law Center, our Committee on Admissions had identified you as one of our stronger applicants and placed you on our preferred waitlist.  As mentioned in the letter you should have already received, you will be one of the first applicants whom we will contact in the event of an opening.

Even though we could not initially offer you a position in the entering class, we stay committed to our promise to update you.  Our first deposit is due May 2, and we hope to have a better idea of potential openings during the week of May 9, but it is possible we may know even sooner.  Please confirm your interest in Georgetown as soon as possible by e-mailing XXXXXXXX XXXXXXX at XXXXXX@law.georgetown.edu.  If you feel comfortable sharing any more specific information about other law school deadlines, she will be happy to pass this along to the Committee as well.

Finally, if spaces do become available, there will be a short time frame for you to make your enrollment decision.  Thus, if you intend to apply for financial aid to help finance your law school costs, you should complete the FAFSA/Need Access forms as soon as possible.  Information on applying for aid is available at www.law.georgetown.edu/finaid. Completing aid materials earlier will facilitate your aid evaluation and minimize delays in your receipt of your award notice.

We will give you an update by e-mail on May 17 and look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

XXXXXXX XXXX
Director of Admissions

Reviews, Visits, and Rankings / Fordham and GW admit days
« on: April 03, 2005, 10:13:22 PM »
Is anybody here going to both the Fordham and GW admit days?  If so, I would like some comparative opinions.  I am trying to decide between the two, and I might not be able to visit until too late.

LSAC and LSDAS / ETA on attached documents
« on: January 29, 2005, 01:43:40 PM »
How long should it take for LSAC to attach my personal statement to my application?  It was taking 5-10 secons this morning, and now it has been 30 minutes.

Law School Applications / Application Blank Question
« on: January 29, 2005, 01:20:52 PM »
Possibly the worst question yet . . .

Is it fine to leave questions blank on the application, or should each blank be filled with a Not Applicable or N/A or None or whatever?

LSAC and LSDAS / Transcript Request Form Question
« on: July 26, 2004, 07:47:18 PM »
Hello all.  I was wondering if anybody knew whether or not LSAC accepts a copy of my transcript request form that was faxed to my college, or do I need to mail one with an original signature to my college?

Law School Applications / Volunteering
« on: July 18, 2004, 08:51:55 PM »
I just began volunteering this week for the March of Dimes in Tucson.  I did not do this to help my application, but because I am out of school, and I finally have the time to volunteer.  What I was wondering is whether or not I should put this volunteer job on my resume for my apps.  I don't want it to look like I did this for the wrong reason.  What do you guys think?

Law School Applications / PS services
« on: July 09, 2004, 09:02:20 AM »
I see quite a few people advocating this Essayedge.com service.  While there is probably no chance that I will use it, I was wondering if any people here did.  It seems that schools would be wise to these services and the types of essays that they "produce".  Maybe I just can't get past the idea of paying for help on my essay.  It seems to be close to some ethical boundary.  The PS seems like the most personal part of the app, and it should be the part where you represent yourself the most honestly.  Am I totally off base here?  I am new to this type of thing.
