Where should I go next fall? / OSU Moritz / Columbus Housing
« on: April 29, 2005, 10:26:10 AM »
I also posted this on the Accepted & Decided Board, so sorry if you're reading it twice.

Anyone out there who is either heading to OSU or is from Columbus? My fiance and I have been looking at all the apartment listing websites trying to find a place. I could have sworn a few days ago that I saw a listing for some townhouses (2BR I think, possibly in the NE part of town) that had some cool split-level floorplan thing going on. Now when I look for them, they seemed to have fallen off the internet. Does anybody know about a place that comes anywhere close to resembling what I'm talking about? It's driving me crazy trying to find it again.

Maybe I just dreamt the whole thing up.

Where should I go next fall? / Billables on NALP Directory
« on: April 16, 2005, 05:11:15 PM »
I've noticed that a number of private firms in the NALP online directory report average associate billables that are lower than minimum associate billables. Anybody know if this is a mistake? Or if a lot of people just don't meet the requirement? Or maybe the average considers part-time associates which skew the numbers?

Plus, the reported hours worked seem quite low as well. Many firms I've seen report 2000 hours and the ones that are higher still report <2200. How reliable are these numbers?

I'm decided. I just need to let them know.

Who's with me?

Reviews, Visits, and Rankings / OSU Moritz
« on: March 17, 2005, 08:01:56 PM »
Visted March 11-13. Very nice program. Put us up in a decent hotel for 2 nights, fun social mixer type thing at the Buckeye Hall of Fame Cafe, presentations all day Saturday and then a great dinner at the Ohio Statehouse.

The Moritz people impressed me the most. Admissions officers, professors, and current students were all very smart people who were at the same time quite down to earth. I could definitely see myself working with those people every day.

Job placement is my biggest concern. While OSU has a placement rate in the mid 90% range, I get the impression that you'll have a rough time outside of Ohio if you're not near the top of your class. Of course there are exceptions. Morit's national reputation is starting to improve (the school is one of the best in alternative dispute resolution and houses the ABA's official journal on ADR, according to the presentations).

The law building is kind of funny. I believe half of it is an older building and the other half is a more recent addition. The new moot court room is beautiful and technologically loaded.

Columbus seems like a cool city. Tons of stuff to do on high street (where the law school is), but you also have the arena district near downtown if you want to get away from the college bar type thing. Cost of living pretty low. Plus, the COTA bus system (free for students) is pretty extensive, so you can live a little ways from campus and still ride right to Moritz. My fiance and I have seen some very nice places northwest of the campus area.

If anyone else has impressions of OSU Moritz, please post. I'm also willing to answer questions if you have 'em.

What did you think of the weekend program? Did it help convince you one way or the other?

Where should I go next fall? / U Mich and UVa

Anyone still waiting on these two? My apps at both places were complete back in mid-November. The only thing preventing me from completely assuming rejections is the fact that my numbers are right in the middle for both.  :-\

Where should I go next fall? / OSU Moritz Scholarship Weekend

Anybody going next weekend?

I see lots of posts saying something along the lines of:

If you want a job that pays $120+ K verus a job that pays $80- or $90 K, you'd best go to the highest-ranked law school you can get into.

Couple questions:

1) Is this statement comparing jobs in the same city? That is, are we talking about a $100 K job in Chicago versus an $80 K job in Chicago?

2) Are we comparing jobs where you would be working pretty much the same amount? Is the difference in salaries between two jobs where you would be working 60 hours a week? Or are we saying that the $120 K is more likely to be at a sweatshop type firm that requires 3000 billables?

I ask because I'm trying to decide between a school that has a national rep. (and has offered me no $) and a school that has more of a regional rep. in a smaller market that I would be quite happy in (which has offered me some $ and costs much less to begin with). I'm willing to sacrifice salary to be able to have a life outside of work. If the more regional school will allow me to do this, that's great.

Where should I go next fall? / Anyone familiar with Ohio State?
« on: February 14, 2005, 11:29:46 AM »
I've visited and liked it, been accepted, been offered some money and applied for the Moritz Scholarship. I liked the tour but, of course, would like some candid information. Anybody have anything to offer? Info about courses, quality of life, faculty, student body, or any other topic will be greatly appreciated.
