General Off-Topic Board / Help me decide on a notebook!
« on: June 17, 2005, 11:14:58 AM »
Deciding between the two:

1) DELL 700M - $850 w/o tax and w/o service plan - 4.2 lbs
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 725 (1.60 GHz/400MHz FSB)12.1-in WXGA, 256mbRAM, 40gig HD, Microsoft® Windows® XP Home, 12.1 inch display,

2) Acer Aspire 3002LCi - $549  w/o tax and w/o service plan - 6.2lbs
AMD Mobile Sempron™ 2800+
• 15" XGA TFT display, 40GB hard drive, 256MB of DDR SDRA

I really don't care all that much about the spec's - I only plan on doing word processing and internet.  Plus, my husband has our 'workhorse' computer that we can use whenever we want to do something more processing intensive.  The most important things are: price and weight.  I will be walking to school (approx 7 minute walk).  I don't know how much difference two pounds will make, but I cannot imagine lugging our other laptop around (10lbs w/ battery).  If I do get the Dell, I will most likely get the service plan (approx $300); however, I wouldn't get a plan if I got the Acer.  I can't justify spending more than half the cost of the computer on a warranty plan - and if something does go wrong with that computer, I would use the money I would have spent on the plan and just get a new one.

I have heard good things about both, so they're about the same in my mind with respect to quality.  I do like the small size of the Dell, but is it worth an extra $300?  I plan on having this computer as our cheap and small companion to our other desktop replacement computer, so I'm worried that the Acer may be too big...but it's such a great price!!

Any help??

As of now, I'm personally leaning toward the Acer.

Incoming 1Ls / screwed by early decision?
« on: April 15, 2005, 01:37:35 PM »
did i screw myself out of scholarship $$ by applying and accepting into an early decision acceptance?  i've seen a bunch of kids with similar numbers to mine, some lower, who have gotten substantial merit aid.  I know it's not all about #'s, blah blah blah.  And i got some pure need-based aid, so i'm by no means complaining.  But i'm curious.  Here is my question: what would be the incentive to a school to give ED kids merit aid when we're already bound?  is anyone else in a similar position?  did you get merit aid?

Law School Admissions / any money from vandy?
« on: January 11, 2005, 08:07:27 AM »
seems like for most people the deciding factor for choosing vandy would be how much $$$ they'd offer.

anyone see the love yet?  I know the scholarship essays were due yesterday, but just wanted to see if anyone was just THAT awesome and already got an offer.
