Law School Applications / Validity of LSAT as a gauge of success
« on: January 07, 2005, 12:14:49 PM »
This just recently dawned upon me, so I wanted to get your opinions:

I took the Princeton Review course prior to taking the LSAT last year. My first practice test score was a 151, and after completing the course I got a 164 on the real LSAT.

So many people say that there is "a great correlation between LSAT performance and law school success." If this is true, then my chances of being successful in law school dramatically increased as a result of taking the Princeton Review course, which quite frankly is horseshit.

I'm just wondering how they justify the LSAT as a tool for admissions.

Acceptances / Fordham Admission Packet
« on: January 03, 2005, 11:11:55 AM »
Got into Fordham full time, and received everything(Alumni Journal, Fin. Aid, Acceptance Letter) BUT the actual admissions packet.

Did anyone receive the actual packet or know when they're coming? The one with like a deposit slip and all that.

On-line status check says "First Deposit Due." Sheesh, calm down people, it's only January! :P

Is anyone here considering going to Fordham? Do you know someone that is?

Just wanted to get some inside info on the school. Quality of Life, fin. aid, etc.

Law School Applications / New Breed of Law Grad - Interesting Article
« on: December 15, 2004, 11:25:56 PM »
This seems to have come up in a few threads, and it is very important depending on how you want to practice law, small or big firm. Basically the article states that traditional law schools teach you the theory behind law and some non-trad ones are beginning to teach practical skills that small law firms desperately need.

Law School Applications / Financial Aid for working adults
« on: December 10, 2004, 04:52:55 AM »
Does anyone know how the fin. aid works with people that are in the workforce right now but will be going to school?

I figure they don't give a very good package based on your FAFSA the first year, simply because you were working full-time, but what happens your second and third year when you're in school?

Law School Applications / Fordham Status Check
« on: December 08, 2004, 08:46:15 PM »
Do you guys know how that thing works?

There was an old thread on LSD about fordham's admission status system, but not sure what the conclusion is.

My status has been complete for a while, and updated to "Complete" once again on the third.

For those of you that got in - does the status change to decision? And how did they accept/reject - with an e-mail/letter?

Thanks,

Law School Applications / Work at Law Firm vs. Own Law Firm
« on: December 06, 2004, 07:57:48 PM »
In light of all these Tier I vs. Tier II and III school discussions, I was wondering what the people here on LSD were shooting for?

Working at a BigLaw/LittleLaw and making partner, or trying to start their own firm?

I understand that unless you've got a lot of money it's very difficult to finance your own firm, but how would you go about it unless you already work at a firm and could take some of your clients with you?

What kind of law would you practice? It's probably very difficult to start up a firm that does Intellectual Property work, as opposed to an Ambulance chasing one....

Also, besides "quality of teaching" and connections, what benefit do you get from attending a Top 25 school and getting tons of loans, as opposed to going to a lower ranked one?

Law School Applications / BC, U Penn, Fordham EA notifications
« on: December 02, 2004, 11:40:24 AM »
It looks like those schools are doing all their reviewing and sending out all their EA acceptance/rejection letters later on(close to the deadline as opposed to sending them as they go).

Is this common practice? (On LSN it looks like Fordham sent out a couple of acceptances to top notch apps, but the majority don't know yet)

Law School Applications / Career Outlook for the next 10 years
« on: December 01, 2004, 06:01:25 PM »
Some positive thoughts: We've all heard that there's an overabundance of lawyers in today's economy. This may be true, but consider the fact that there is a huge generation gap in today's workforce. Large corporations are hiring people by the thousands(IBM - 12,000, Boeing - 1,000, etc.).

I would imagine that today's lawyers would have less difficulaty retiring than other workers due to their financial situation. Altogether it seems like the career outlook is outstanding.

What do you all think?
