Financial Aid / Private loans beyond the amount approved by your school

Does anyone know if it is possible to get an additional private loan beyond the amount approved by your school? Can't really do a general personal loan, because I don't think banks will let me wait 3 years to start paying it off. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
