I was planning on reading a commercial outline (Emmanuel's, Gilbert's) in addition to the assigned cases/textbook reading. My question though is: Is it better to read the commercial outline section before or after the assigned case readings? I heard some people say before (to get a good understanding of the broader issue) but I think it would be helpful to fight with the stuff on my own at first. What do people think?

Law School Applications / USC - What are my chances at this point?
« on: February 27, 2005, 07:59:48 PM »
I applied RD in September and haven't heard yet (complete in January). I called recently and they said they haven't made a decision on my file yet. I have borderline stats. Is there still a realistic chance at this point (read: USC is just behind) or should I prepare myself for a rejection/waitlist? I guess for any other school not having heard at this point would not be a good sign - is it different for USC? Are they really so much behind?  ??? ??? ???

Law School Applications / Aspen Examples & Explanations
« on: February 26, 2005, 12:49:01 PM »
I've heard those are the best of the study guides to read before 1L if you want to get an idea of the subjects. Can anybody confirm this? Are people looking into stuff like that before classes start? Thanks!

Law School Applications / Good book for learning how to brief?
« on: February 25, 2005, 07:41:59 PM »
I'd really like to be familiar with briefing cases before starting law school. I've seen one or two examples, but does anyone know a book that specifically shows you how to brief cases (e.g. gives you actual cases and then gives you an example of how the case should look like as a brief)? Any recommendations for books about briefing would be much appreciated!

Law School Applications / Two questions for current 1Ls
« on: February 23, 2005, 10:47:55 AM »
Hey huys, I have two questions for current 1Ls:

1) How much do you guys really work? Can you give app. hours per day/week? Do you think your amount of work is representative or above/below average?

2) I was wondering what courses exactly I will have in my first semester. Do you start out with all first-year courses at once or do you have say torts in your first semester and civ pro or con law in your second? How many courses do you have per semester: 4 (like in college) or more?

Thanks!

Law School Applications / Light laptop with 14 or 15 inch screen
« on: February 18, 2005, 01:41:40 PM »
So I'm looking for a light laptop but the ultralight ones all seem to have a 12 inch screen, which I find too small. Any recommendations for a relatively light one with a 14 or 15 inch screen?

Thanks!

Law School Applications / Someone explain the curve to me
« on: February 17, 2005, 03:43:41 PM »
So I always read about the curve in LS. If the curve is "set" at say 3.3, does that mean that 3.3 is the average GPA/50th percentile? So to have a higher GPA than 3.3. you would just have to be in the upper half right? How difficult would that be? I mean still not easy but it seems like a realistic goal right?

Wait List / When will Cornell deferrals here?

Got deferred by Cornell (EA). Does anybody have a guess when we will hear and what the chances are?
