Current Law Students / Advice for open book?
« on: May 04, 2010, 07:42:24 AM »
Okay so this may be a shock, but I am a 3L and taking only my second open book exam this semester. I had one before and I did pretty mediocre on it. Does anyone have any good tips?

So far I have made a longer outline..
Went through it to find all the relevant topics and made single page outlines for each of the little issues (about 10 in all)...

Now I don't know what to do the outline over the next couple days as if its not open book? Make some charts to make my answers quicker?

Thanks - I know this is odd coming from a 3rd year, but we have almost all closed book exams at my school.

Job Search / What's your strategy?
« on: April 01, 2010, 12:41:59 PM »
Anyone out there applying for non-legal jobs? I am trying to work in NY after graduation - the field of law that interests me is probably too competitive for me to get into off the bat. Anyway, I am finding myself applying to a lot of small firms and public interest organizations as well as non-legal jobs. Does anyone have the same strategy? Ultimately, I want to be in law, but it seems like the market is just too bad for a mediocre student like myself to find anything in the current economy. Any thoughts? anyone think this is is a bad or good idea?

I have applied to SEVERAL government and public interest offices, I got very few responses, and ended up getting dicked out of a government position which i was pretty much told I was going to be a result I have decided to take some classes and TA for the summer... anyone else out there with a similar situation?

Job Search / Fed. Gov, 2L Summer
« on: September 07, 2008, 07:32:36 PM »
I am currently looking into a bunch of different federal government positions for my 2L summer (no rush because most don't seem to hire til the spring anyway). I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with fed. gov organizations during a 2L summer. I can't seem to figure out whether the 2L summer positions are their main means of hiring graduates or not. As most of the jobs do not pay for the summer, I was wondering if I would be better of just working for a firm this summer and earning some cash. I would ideally like to work for the DOI or EPA...and I have very little info from anyone who has worked at either....but any advice from someone who has worked for the government would be helpful. Thanks a lot.

Current Law Students / Practicing Abroad
« on: July 03, 2008, 09:02:21 AM »
Does anyone know where I can find requirements needed to practice law abroad with a law degree from a US institution...I'm guessing it would require more schooling, but I'm interested in finding out out exactly how much, and what kind of programs these long it takes? Interested in Switzerland, particularly...anybody have any info?

...and going out with the whole section as is probably a pretty normal thing...anyone have any hilarious stories about people from who seem pretty "reserved" in class getting totally out of control? Any other good end of 1L stories?

Current Law Students / Writing worth it?
« on: April 09, 2008, 06:13:29 PM »
Basically I don't have a shot at making Law Review...grades just aren't high enough. However I feel that I may be able to make one of my school's secondary journals. The problem is that I have a big conflict with the writing competition...anyways, it is possible for me to still compete. But if I only have a shot and one of the secondary journals how worth it would it be to break my neck that week to complete the competition?

Current Law Students / DOI jobs
« on: February 25, 2008, 02:19:13 PM »
Not sure if i should be asking this question here or the transfers, but whatever...

Currently top 1/3 at a tier 2 in NY, and I'm wondering what my best shot at possibly getting a Dept. of the Interior job when I graduate would be...I don't know about how competitive positions like this are, but I do know that they are mostly based in the Northwest/oregon...
Anyway, does it make sense for me to stay in NY?
If so should I try to transfer up, and with my rank is that even possible?
Or does it make more sense for me to lateral transfer or possibly transfer up to somewhere in the northwest?
Does anyone have any insight to getting into the DOI jobs?
