Current Law Students / What to expect as a 1L summer associate?
« on: February 17, 2007, 03:04:36 PM »
I know how to do some research and some writing, but wouldn't say I'm exceptional at either. How much will firms expect a 1L SA to do?

Also, how hard do they generally work you over the summer? How much of it is fun stuff? How hard is it to get an invite back for 2L summer?

Current Law Students / talking about grades?
« on: January 05, 2007, 01:26:02 PM »
My friend who just graduated from my law school a few years ago told me not to talk about grades - that it would either make me feel bad or make the other person feel bad - and that no good would come of it.

I have one grade so far and I've only told my family. I haven't even discussed the fact that we have a grade posted with any of my classmates, let alone tell them how I fared.

I'm starting school soon - Should I expect that a lot of my classmates will be discussing grades? I was surprised by how many people discussed exams, but grades are more personal.

Did many people at your school discuss grades? Ask about yours? Tell you theirs? I'm just wondering what to expect..

Job Search / $475/week?
« on: January 05, 2007, 08:57:26 AM »
I just received an offer from a medium-sized firm (large in the context of the area, but only about 45 lawyers) for a 1L summer position. The pay for a 1L summer associate is $475/week.

I'm assuming since 1L firm jobs are hard to come by that there is no point in attempting to negotiate salary. Is this a normal/respectable salary? (it seems really low!)
I'm not sure how long I have to get back to them. Thoughts?
