1L job search / DIversity Programs at Law Firms
« on: August 05, 2008, 10:12:30 PM »
can you guys inform me how this works?
i assume it's just like an SA position, but for minorities, and 1Ls.
is the pay and the work similar to regular 2L SA positions, but with just a touch of diversitiness? or is it completely different and UNPAID?
and do these also often come with an offer at the end of the summer?
also, are international students eligible for this? i know that usually with institutions, diversity doesn't cover foreign nationals (we apparently are a race of our own, one that doesn't contribute to diversity), but i'm guessing when lawfirms are just looking for colors in their offices, this won't matter?

and how competitive are these? i mean yeah, i assume since it's only a handful of cases in a handful of law schools, it's tough, but exactly how tough? like, the first-black-EIC-of-Harvard-Law-Review tough?

Where should I go next fall? / Michigan vs NW
« on: March 26, 2008, 03:00:27 AM »
Mich treading on old prestige, moving down.
NW on an upward trend.
Want to do biglaw, in NYC.
which is a better choice, do you think?

Law School Applications / LOCI + additional essay
« on: February 13, 2008, 06:24:37 AM »
Ok, here's the deal.
So I'm thinking of sending an LOCI to a couple schools that I still might consider.

At the same time, I've done a lot of thinking in the process, and have really come out with some PS-worthy material. About who/what I am, why I want to do law, what I plan on doing with a JD, all that good stuff.

Might it be possible to send an LOCI that includes this little spiel?

Or should LOCI just be straight up, "I'm still interested in going to School X because School X is awesome for these following reasons" without the spiel?

Law School Applications / What's Michigan like?
« on: February 10, 2008, 02:38:59 AM »
so i had this under a different sub-board, but got no responses so i'm posting here, since this place seems to have most activity

so I'm totally ready to go. Real excited about Michigan.
What's the place like though? I mean I've heard a lot about UVA's laid back beer/softball culture, and I totally dig that. I am even looking forward to that fratty atmosphere. Or about Penn's cutthroatness (whether it's true or not).
But I haven't heard much about Michigan. (And I'm definitely not the city-type, i'm real glad that i'll be going to UofM)
I mean, it's a big school so I'm sure there's a niche for everyone. And I'm sure football is a pretty big thing there (yes? no?). But what else? Is there also a beer/softball subculture? Will there be plentiful opportunities for Edward Fortyhands?
but then again, maybe it's this very atmosphere that caused my GPA to resemble a Cy Young winner ERA

Law School Applications / Michigan decision.... come ON
« on: February 04, 2008, 05:33:37 AM »
So I applied in October, not ED
and got one of those "we're still looking at stuff" email from Dean Z. The email that everyone thought was a deferral.

And like, ok, so I should send in "additional material". But I've been very, real, super busy at work and with real life. And began work on the additional essay just this past weekend.

and just now i check the status again. It says DECISION.

for i'm pretty sure that this is a rejection, i'm totally like. sigh. i should just have gone out last weekend.

sigh. pplease get here soon.

not merit scholarship, but the need-based, through FAFSA

how does it work? do these exist?
are law schools need-blind?

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / does Econ help with law school/biglaw?
« on: January 13, 2008, 05:30:41 AM »
Does having a background in economics help with

1) doing well in law school if my focus is on the corporate side
2) getting a biglaw job
3) succeeding in that said job
4) exit options

what do you think? i totally don't know, was just curious, am an english (creative writing) major

Law School Applications / ED at Penn, still NOTHING
« on: January 11, 2008, 09:08:17 PM »
no call, no email, no mail.
what's the deal here? i was complete, received the email saying i was complete for ED. said i'd have my decision by Dec 31, I have heard nothing.
not even the "held" email ppl are talking about

should I call? given that they give you the "contact us" link, instead of the email address, i'm venturing a guess that they don't like to be bothered, and I don't want to irritate them at all.

what's the story here, do you think? is anyone else still waiting after EDing?

Law School Applications / BC reject, Fordham defer
« on: December 31, 2007, 06:06:04 AM »
ok. my numbers ain't great, but it was solidly in the middle of the "accepted" pack for BC and Fordham, according to LSN. and they ain't high enough for yield protect, either. clearly they hated something about me, the man, the personal statement

whereas

my numbers were solid waitlist material at GULC. but i got in, not even 3 weeks after going complete. with a note saying "exceptional background". clearly they loved something about me, the man, the personal statement

which  is driving me absolutely nuts. there is no way to predict how the hell my cycle is gonna turn out.
