Financial Aid / when does private loan info come out?
« on: July 19, 2008, 10:28:23 AM »
so there's been a hold up in processing loans at bc, or so the fin aid office tells me, and i'm not terribly worried about that but...when can i start applying for private loans? the mefa information for this year hasn't been released yet, i'm worried about covering my first tuition payment because i want to make sure the loan funds get here in time...what's a girl to do?

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / BC LAW PEOPLE!
« on: May 21, 2008, 08:41:27 PM »
okay everyone. here is the deal. i know people are on the housing hunt right now.

i had a roommate (not a bc person) who i thought was definitely in on this apartment. she flaked out on me, but i went ahead with the apartment assuming that one of you fine people might be interested, or someone might know someone who is looking, etc.

the apartment is a two bedroom right on the brighton/brookline line, off of comm ave and literally steps from the green line. we're also right across the street from whole foods. rent is 1650 a month, which includes hot water and heat (we need to pay for electricity and cable and internet and all that good stuff). move-in date is july 1st, because i have a job in boston this summer. ideally, i'd like to live with another female (sorry boys), someone who takes school seriously but takes partying seriously too. not that we'll be having raging parties at the apartment every night, but someone who likes to go out on weekends/doesn't mind being social. i also like to do things like...watch trashy tv and rent movies from netflix and read good books. i will rent movies for you on my netflix account. isn't that a good bribe?

other than that, no pets, i don't really care about smokers as long as the apartment doesn't reek, someone who is neat in common space (your room is your business) and the like.

PM me if you're interested or if you know someone else who might be!

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / apartment hunting in boston
« on: April 27, 2008, 08:23:02 PM »
okay, so i'm a baby who has never had to look for an apartment before on my own, and i don't know what the hell i'm doing. i have no idea whether to look for a broker, or not, or what a good price is for the areas that i want to live (allston, brighton, brookline...you know).

my other issue: roommates. i am considering living with one or two friends who are not law students. the problem is, they are both on the job hunt and we all know how that can be. i already have several summer job interviews in the boston area. i live about forty five minutes south of boston, so i don't mind commuting for part of the summer, but i would love to move in july or so. problem is, i have to wait for these two ladies to figure their stuff out before they will agree to room with me. if they can't get jobs in boston, then it's a no-go. if i wait to look until the end of may, am i out of luck as far as a july 1st (or near that at least) move-in date? and does anyone want a roommate if my prospects fall through?  :)

Where should I go next fall? / BC vs. Money
« on: March 28, 2008, 12:23:12 PM »
so as everyone probably knows, i really have my heart set on bc for the fall. i just checked my fin aid package, however, and it's not so great. i have other schools that have offered me money, and at this point, i'm freaked out at having to take out so many loans, especially with my interest in pursuing a career in public interest. i still have loans from undergrad, my parents are not supporting me in law school (my dad isn't really even employed and my sister is still in ug herself). i don't know if bc will come through with merit money. there's also a private scholarship from my ug for which i'm applying, but again, nothing is a guarantee. should i just throw caution to the wind, say eff it, and go for bc, and work my tail off for any scholarship opportunities which might come my way? or should i consider some of the lower ranked schools who are throwing money in my face?

Law School Applications / Fordham PT
« on: March 24, 2008, 11:58:38 AM »
so i ended up on the waitlist at fordham about a month ago, and they sent the information about staying on the waitlist to my home (not to my address at school). thus, i have not replied to them about staying on it, which i do sort of want to do. additionally...is it too late to ask them to consider me for pt? i know i'm pretty set on bc right now, but a part of me still really wants nyc as an option....

hm!

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / wack relationship thread
« on: March 23, 2008, 10:01:53 AM »
so i've posted before about relationships here, but now it seems to be getting closer to doomsday. i've been with my boyfriend for about a year, and for all intents and purposes, i would love to be with him for you know...more than a year.

the kicker has finally come. he applied to a variety of schools to get his phd, and has currently only been accepted at michigan. he got rejected at harvard and berkeley and waitlisted at princeton (all of which i think are wack because well, he's very intelligent and his credentials are great, but i think his big downfall is that he's coming right from ug). columbia is still pending for him.

i, for all intents and purposes, will be going to school in boston.

see the problem?

what do i do? i'm totally devastated right now.

Where should I go next fall? / BC...money..it's what I want.... doo doo doo
« on: February 26, 2008, 08:53:43 PM »
So as I go on my wild BC tear across the LSD boards, I figured I'd pose a couple of questions re: scholarship money.

My numbers are good, but nothing to write home about. I've been offered scholarships at both Tulane and Northeastern (Tulane a lot, Northeastern not so much). BC is clearly my first choice at this point, and I'm really excited about going there, but I haven't heard from them about money yet.

My first question is, how long did those of you who got scholarships wait after your acceptance to hear about them? I'm also curious about numbers, but I wouldn't ask you to post them unless you feel comfortable. How generous is BC with financial aid?

Second part of the question is, I'm wondering if it's rude to ask for money if I'm not sure if I'm going to get it. I feel like I don't have that much leverage given that my scholarships are from lower-ranked schools, so barring any money from one of the other schools I'm waiting on, I don't know what my bargaining power is, if any. I'd love to let BC know that they are my first choice, and I could absolutely commit to them they threw me a financial bone (anything would help). Is this appropriate to do? I don't want to seem sleazy or ungrateful. When should I do it? Has anyone else done this?

Ayy...I'm dancing around in my chair to American Idol and avoiding a paper. Indulge me.

Where should I go next fall? / BC vs. Northeastern
« on: February 21, 2008, 11:08:39 AM »
i know you guys love these questions which are asked about a million times a second so...here i go.

i got into bc yesterday and was totally thrilled, especially because i had gotten waitlisted at fordham mere hours earlier. maybe it was the cute little folder they sent me, but i'm really compelled by bc. i think there is a good chance, however (though i know stranger things have happened), that i will not get money at bc. of the other schools i applied to, i am in at suffolk (which is pretty much a no go at this point), tulane with money (though not sure how much yet), and waiting on several others. i expect to get into northeastern with my numbers, and am hoping to get some money for them.

HYPOTHETICALLY, if i get into bc sans money, and northeastern with money, what do i do? i'm not terribly interested in biglaw; i'm really wanting to do criminal law in a big big way. i would like to be in boston, but i wouldn't mind being in nyc either for a period of time. there's a good chance my so will end up at princeton, so being in that area at some point soon would be okay with me if things pan out that way.

additionally, if bc is the right choice, is it possible to work them for some money? i idiotically missed the deadline for the public service scholarship (foolish, i know, not that i would have gotten it anyway, but i didn't see the information until literally about twelve hours before the deadline...doh!), so i'm wondering what my options are.

as always, thanks.

Where should I go next fall? / Suffolk
« on: January 22, 2008, 06:07:57 PM »
there might not be a point to this, as i'm not sure how many suffolk people are lurking on these boards, but i just got accepted to suffolk today. it was one of my safeties, and i'm hoping for money, but i definitely like the school. i guess i'm just wondering if anyone goes there and can offer me firsthand info on what classes, grading, facilities, job opportunities, social life, blah blah blah, are like. i'm interested in criminal prosecution with a focus on women and children (sex crimes, domestic violence, things like that). anyone? thanks!
