Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / Second thoughts on a withdrawal
« on: April 25, 2008, 05:32:40 PM »
I withdrew from a university 2 weeks ago and have really questioned it since.  I thought I had made my mind up but now I am not sure.  Has anyone here ever withdrawn, recondidered, and reapproached a school?  Regardless, does anyone have any advice for me on this?

Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / Univ of Tenn Waitlist
« on: March 28, 2008, 05:51:51 PM »
I am on the Tenn waitlist and I am wondering if any others have spoken to UT and have any insight as to what can be expected.  As for me, I have a nice scholarship from another university and a couple of other reasonable acceptances.  UT, however, is by far the highest ranked of my schools and I am a Tennessee resident so even without money it is fairly priced.  I can go elsewhere for about $30k less, total.  That may be insignificant to most but I am in my late 40's so I won't have the work life to recover as many of you will.  I think that I will call them Monday and question them and at the same time, get advice on how to handle pending seat deposits elsewhere. Any advice or insight will be appreciated.

I will be visiting a school on April 4th that has a April 1 seat deposit of $100 that I have already paid.  That's a reasonable amount and they are offering me a nice scholarship so I don't mind paying up.  The following week, April 11th, I will be attending an ASD at another school which has a $250 seat deposit due on April 15th. I have the same situation the next week with another school (Visit 19th, pay by the 21st).  I am still serious about all of these schools.  I have been waitlisted by a school in my homestate that is much higher ranked than any of the prior mentioned schools.  Because of the in state tuition and the ranking, I feel like I have to see if I am offered admission there before making a final decision. If I am offered admission I will most likely take the offer. How do I approach the 2nd and 3rd schools, with the $250 seat deposits, and ask for a deferral or waiver of the seat deposit?  I am concerned about both spending the money and also, being misleading.

Choosing the Right Law School / University of Memphis Scholarship
« on: February 16, 2008, 05:50:32 AM »
Does anyone know if the University of Memphis sends out scholarships with admittance or do they come later?

I am a 48 year old man about to apply to law school. I've been in recovery from alcoholism for many years.  Several years ago and for about 5 years I was very active in the recovery community in an anonymous organization.  I "sponsored" many people and had workshops in my home etc.....As far as community involvement goes, that has been just about the extent of it other than normal parenting duties involving the schools with my child. It is ok for me to disclose this in a Personal Statement because the anonymous feature of this program applies only to press, radio, and film.   Also, 5 years ago I ran my first marathon and have done 6 now plus alot of shorter stuff and just completed my first Ultra, a 50k trail race. I have thought of combining these two topics into a single theme of overcoming obstacles etc.... or just isolating one or the other.  I have read where you are not supposed to talk about your negatives but I have to talk some about the negative in order to place the positive in context if I get into my Recovery story.  Opinions please.
