Personal Statement / optional diversity essay
« on: July 28, 2004, 03:49:54 PM »
some schools give you the opportunity to write "optional" essays explaining how you might contribute to the diversity of their student body.  in most instructions that i've seen, you are supposed to comment on your diverse racial, ethnic or socioeconomic background.

now, considering that i am not diverse in any of these ways, should i not write this optional essay?  is it a bad idea to not write it?  or is it better not to blatantly expose my mediocrity?

Personal Statement / new topic idea...take a look
« on: July 23, 2004, 04:21:35 PM »
hi everyone

here's another idea that i'm seriously considering for my PS.

my dad, who is a minister and does counseling, studies this system of personality typing called the enneagram, and he introduced it to me several years ago.  now in my life it's much more of an obsession that permeates everything i do rather than simply an interesting subject to study.  i have learned more about myself from learning my personality type than i ever knew was possible and it helps me to work through my issues for personal growth.  it also helps me to understand other people and realize their motivations for behavior than i would otherwise.  honestly, knowing the enneagram is just amazing.

anyway, so i thought i could write a brief description of the system and my type, and then focus on what i have learned about myself from it, how it helps me deal with other people, and now how knowing this information prepares me for law school. it has quite a strong spiritual dimension, which is something definitely missing from the rest of a typical application.  also, i am a psychology major, so it should make sense why i am interested in this.

any thoughts on this idea?

Personal Statement / weight loss topic
« on: July 09, 2004, 02:31:52 PM »
hi, i'd like to bounce a topic off those of you who care to give advice.

my background is fairly typical for college student, so i'm interested in standing out any way that i can.  i'm trying to go the accomplishment route with this idea: 2 years ago i lost 50 lbs (a substantial amount for someone 5'1") by taking control of my eating and fitness habits, researching all the information on nutrition and health that i could find, and working extremely hard.  i learned how to push myself for what is important.  i think a lot of people can relate to how difficult an experience losing weight is, and i'm so proud of what i did (not to mention that i have maintained that weight loss ever since and have discovered a fine balance with my health now).

by writing about this, i would emphasize my worth ethic, determination, dedication and persistance, and what it's like to reach a goal.  i'd also try to make it entertaining with some humor where possible.

my question is does this topic seem like something that would turn off admissions people or would it pique their interest?  would the qualities i'm writing about seem justified and the story unique, or is this a ridiculous idea that i should forget?
