Law School Applications / This Cycle on LSD....
« on: December 07, 2008, 05:46:03 PM »
...for lack of better words, blows lol...

Seriously, I started reading last cycle and I don't know if it was the people or just the fact that I wasn't the one engaged in the stressful act of applying to law school, but it was a lot better and more fun to read.  I would read all day while I was at work...now I just work  :(

Come on Class of 2012... 8)

Law School Applications / Georgetown Website
« on: November 01, 2008, 12:41:15 PM »
Is anyone else having trouble accessing the Law Center website.

I seems to take forever to load before I get an error message.  What's weird is that I can access the Georgetown main webpage, just not the law page  ???

Law School Applications / Asking For Fee Waivers
« on: October 27, 2008, 04:15:48 PM »
Sooo, received my (subpar) score today and received word that my fee waiver was denied.   :'(

Those of you who have had success in simply asking schools for fee waivers, how did you go about it and which schools were you able to obtain waivers from?

This feels like ugrad financial aid all over again...too much money to get the freebies and not enough to actually pay  :-\

If you don't feel comfortable posting the schools in this thread, please send me a PM.  Thanks!

Personal Statement / PS Review
« on: October 14, 2008, 05:06:27 PM »
Ok, so since I'm having a bit of trouble getting my PS reviewed by current students, I'll try this.  If anyone who has at least been around awhile (meaning no newbies, sorry  :() wouldn't mind taking a look at it, I'd appreciate it.

I had it reviewed once and made some changes, but I can't re-submit because it was a one shot deal.  I'm really ready to be done with this thing.

I'd prefer people who have a good handle on what a PS is supposed to be.

Thanks.

Recommendations / Putting Some Fire Under His Behind....Professionally
« on: October 13, 2008, 04:24:38 PM »
Ok, so I have both of my other recommendations in from people who I submitted information/requests to in September.  I asked for information from my third professor in August.  I even sent a "reminder" in mid September in the form of an update telling all of them about the fax number.  As I have said, two letters have since been submitted.  I'm trying to get my apps in before my score is posted so that the report will be the last thing submitted to make my app complete.  It is almost mid-October (two months from the time I submitted my request to him) and his letter still has not been submitted.  How do I "nicely" prod him to get it together lol.

Law School Applications / Why "X" Essays
« on: October 10, 2008, 08:03:57 PM »
How is everyone approaching these essays?

Doing research on programs that fit your interests and noting how your experiences make you a good fit?  Just merely stating interest in specific courses/clinics/professors?

I have a little bit of both in my essays, but it doesn't seem like i'm addressing not only what the school has to offer but what I would bring to the school.

What's the proper approach in your opinion?  Thanks!

Law School Applications / Opinions on Resume Descriptions
« on: October 07, 2008, 06:22:06 PM »
Hi All,

What are your opinions on descriptions for jobs and/or activities?  Bullet points/lists or a sentence based description?

Did you use any templates or other sources to help you make the decision.  I'm trying to finalize my personal statement and resume while I'm waiting for my LSAT score.  Any advice is appreciated.

Black Law Student Discussion Board / Any Current Law Student Takers?
« on: October 07, 2008, 04:18:19 PM »
Sooo,

I have been reading these boards for awhile.  I just recently sat for the LSAT and am now impatiently waiting to see how terrible I did  :-\

Anyway, in the mean time I'm taking another look at my personal statement (which reads like a diversity statement).  I have been writing it for several months.  I submitted it to For People Of Color who does free reviews of minority applicants admission materials.  They made some pretty good suggestions but overall said that I had a great statement.  I think I may have edited the essay to their liking but unfortunately I can't resubmit (one time deal).  I know you guys are mostly Harvard, Yale, and other T-14 students who will probably rip it to shreds, but if any current minority students are willing to give it a once (or twice) over, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Personal Statement / PS vs. DS: Overlap?
« on: September 09, 2008, 07:17:48 PM »
Hi All,

I'm still trying to get a strong handle on this application cycle.  One thing I've noticed is that most people recommend writing a PS and and DS.  I have been working on my statement for several months, and I feel like I have a great PS.  After reading this board though, I think my statement may read like a DS.  If this is the case, do I need to start from scratch on a PS? I really don't have time for that.

For those who wrote both, what kind of topics did your PS focus on?  I have no clue what to write about as I have used all of my energy on writing the statement that I have which probably, to most people at least, fit the criteria of a DS.

Personal Statement / GPA/Academic Probation Addendum
« on: September 03, 2008, 08:08:14 PM »
I have a very rough first draft of an addendum that explains my grades from my first school (I did terribly).

Any English majors or others who wish to be a brutal critic on grammar and content?

I have tried to make it as factual (read: no excuses/whining) as possible and still tell exactly what happened. I'm looking for a happy medium.

Readers who are students who have had to write something similar are also appreciated.

Thanks!
