Ode to the White Horse Tavern
Chen Kasher
“In addition to its requisite libations, ”
This knight over the Greenwich loam
Might serve you Dylan Thomas’s special, whiskey sour,
Near peanuts touched by the stubborn fingers
Of writers clamoring for attention: O’Hara, Ashbery,

Ezra Pound’s shoe, a stray cat of Ginsberg’s keeping,
Sinclair’s conscience, Hemingway’s zest,
Or, perhaps, a “sit-down meal for you poetry pilgrims”
That have arrived too early for a drink,
Considering you demand an unwavering seascape, like Crane.

Here, to believe that your pet writers stayed sober
Is an act of faith beyond verse,
Since “malt does more than Milton can / to justify God’s ways, ”
And there is always one doodler
In the corner, his left eye a little closed, recording your deeds

Like the seraphs of heaven. Women don’t distract
This churl and his jeremiad,
If that is the lengthy piece that he is writing (at all) ,
But he shifts his eyes, occasionally,
To the stage in anticipation of a Mingus lick or two,

Where, like a proboscis over a riverbed,
A benign gray bass is content
To rumble or pussyfoot only when he really has to.
“Wir Sind Helden.” The waiter’s stage
Of revolving calamari, with suctions that have scoured the deep

Snags of the freezer out back and Long Island Sound
Go over to table fifteen,
Over articulate clientele that do more than “ooh”
And “aah, ” but, rather, illustrate
This mini-kraken’s hydrostats, now splayed like underfoot leaves.

“More as a decorative purpose than real use, ”
These appendages haven’t touched
The icy and discriminating patrons’ silverware
Perking up at these concave cups,
Mewed rows “each a single piece of stone / Made modester by whitewash, ”

While, to their back, a cluster of lawyers discuss
The “doctrine of unintended
Consequences, ” suggesting someone like the cat,
Piebald and matronly, could eat
These leftovers during a lull in conversation or writing.

Pens out, ears pinned to the trundle of this railway
Of beer: those that aren’t eating are
Writing, and those that aren’t writing are eating – or reaching
Out for the right words they won’t say
Till this overhead fan becomes more considerate toward language.

One (a couple) might think this is a store of junk
Only for elegies: a cup
Scratched by Augustus, a “fragment from Sebastian’s arrows, ”
And the raconteur that still claims
That Jesus was crucified on a steel pole, the one he carries.

A pilgrimage for poets here? Bow down to this?
Yes, if you want an up-town feel
In a down-town pub; a 6th street menagerie touched by
The hands of English poetry,
Each of their fingers balking at the touch of long-legged silhouettes,

Then you might be a poet. If, however, you
Think that these things may be just things,
And words from stuff emerges like history, perpetual,
Then all of this has been for naught:
And prosody could have happened at Walter’s tavern down the street.
